Villagers furious with Christian Missionaries

Samanthapettai, Jan 16 (ANI): Rage and fury has gripped this tsunami-hit tiny Hindu village in India's southern Tamil Nadu after a group of Christian missionaries allegedly refused them aid for not agreeing to follow their religion.

Samanthapettai, near the temple town of Madurai, faced near devastation on the December 26 when massive tidal waves wiped it clean of homes and lives.

Most of the 200 people here are homeless or displaced , battling to rebuild lives and locating lost family members besides facing risks of epidemic, disease and trauma.

Jubilant at seeing the relief trucks loaded with food, clothes and the much-needed medicines the villagers, many of who have not had a square meal in days, were shocked when the nuns asked them to convert before distributing biscuits and water.

Heated arguments broke out as the locals forcibly tried to stop the relief trucks from leaving. The missionaries, who rushed into their cars on seeing television reporters and the cameras refusing to comment on the incident and managed to leave the village.

Disappointed and shocked into disbelief the hapless villagers still await aid.

"Many NGOs (volunteer groups) are extending help to us but there in our village the NGO, which was till now helping us is now asking us to follow the Christian religion. We are staunch followers of Hindu religion and refused their request. And after that these people with their aid materials are leaving the village without distributing that to us," Rajni Kumar, a villager said.

The incident is an exception to concerted charity in a catastrophe that has left no one untouched.(ANI)

Man i bet half of this is so far out of preportion its not funny. You really think they said "Turn christian or we wont help you." I doubt that. Its not even logical, it wouldnt work. If these people did it, as soon as the missionaries left they would just go back to their own ways, and the Christian missionaries know this, so whats the point?

I bet its just a case of the missionaries wanting them to respect their Christian beliefs. Which is fair enough, if you want something from someone, the least you can do is respect them, not ignore their beliefs but at the same time expect them to follow your muslim or hindu beliefs.

The article, apart from that obviously biased quote, says nothing about what these Christians did or why they left. Its all worded to make them look bad, but shows no proof what so ever. It doesnt even say if the aid was meant for them, maybe it was meant for the village over. Everything written in it is just bullshit.

And if they are preaching about Jesus, that is their God given right and freedom to do so. You dont have to listen to them, but dont disrespect their beliefs. Simple

Quote, so many people lack of respect these days, it's sad.

if the missionaries did refuse help just cause of the religion they suck and they haven't understood what there job is, what God wants them to do.

i hardly call kidnapping and airlifting 300 orphans all under 12 who lost their parents in the tsunami by christians missionaries their god given right. you dont understand some of these missionaries, you know how many of them have been killed in india for bribing people with money food etc as an exchange for their conversion? thousands!

WASHINGTON - A missionary group based in Virginia said this week that it has airlifted 300 "tsunami orphans" from the Muslim province of Aceh to Jakarta, the Indonesian capital, where it plans to raise them in a Christian children's home.

here's what i mean

Most of the religious charities do not attach any conditions to their aid, and many of the larger ones — such as World-Vision, Catholic Relief Services and Church World Service — have policies against proselytizing. But a few of the smaller groups have been raising money among evangelical Christians by presenting the tsunami emergency effort as a rare opportunity to make converts in hard-to-reach

"These children are homeless, destitute, traumatized, orphaned, with nowhere to go, nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat. If we can place them in a Christian children's home, their faith in Christ could become the foothold to reach the Aceh people," it said.

I think it is sad that these victims are being exploited in such a manner. Why can't they convert people into christians by explaining the bible and the benefits of becoming a christian to them. Instead they tell them that if they dn't convert they'll die of starvation. Is this what the bible teaches them. I think this shows the sad state that christianity is in right now. Real christians are hard to come by. Ive even seen a church which has been converted into a night club. Its a sad situation for christians and i hope the missionaries who partook in this exploitation are severly punished.

Where does it say that they were disrespecting the Christian religon?
Nobody here really knows whether this happened or not so nobody can call it bullshit.
They are supposed to be offering relief not Jesus, I dont expect them to not talk about what they beleive but do it while your doing your job - If infact this story is true its sickening this should have been an opportunity to show people that Christians and Muslims and all religons can join together on something and help people.

I agree with you there. What should be the underlying concern is helping rebuild communities and prevent death and disease. Surely this is one instance in life where we can put religion at the back of our minds for one second and concentrate on the prevention of human suffering, regardless of their personal beliefs, at the forefront.

I do, however, recognise that in situations such as this, turning to faith is the best way that people can deal with it and no doubt they want to share it with others. Really though, if we are talking about over-coming challenges and obstacles through belief and love of God, then isn't this something that all religions have in common? So there should be no tension or concern over religious manipulation, instead a time to unite and recognise these common goals of compassion, respect and unwaivering faith to rectify an overwhelmingly devastating situation.

In terms of the air lifting of children into Christian homes, would you rather they left them to die from hunger and lack of shelter, or take them to a sheltered area where they have food and are loved but in a Christian environment? Its obvious that as a Christian group, they have Christian homes and Christian beliefs. They are spending their money and time to look after these people, but because they are Christian, their environment is Christian too.

Mate it's cool to follow your religion, but when you act as if what is happening in Sudan has nothing to do with religion and theres just a few fools pillaging some villages it just shows how little you know. Islamic millitants are slaughtering the minority christians, millions are dead! millions!! If your a christian then your as good as an animal that should be raped http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=26672

Do not deny all this shit techy, i'm sick of you trying to defend your bullshit, when you know what is happening. Why are like 90% of religious wars involving islam? even your own islamic proffesors have admited that there are huge problems with islam and militancy, everyone knows it,, its just half the people on this board are too pissweak to say anything.

why are you trying to defend your religion by simply insulting Islam. This thread isn't about Sudan. If you wanna go on about Sudan then teck neex can refer to palestine. Lets talk about the topic specified by the thread. What those missionaries did was wrong and incorrect. They deserve to be punished for it. Their actions also represents the current state of christianity, which is becoming less and less popular. Why not convert people to christianity through peace and knowledge. Allow them to learn and respect the religion rather than force them into it. Pz
