Birdshot causes 'minor heart attack' in Cheney's victim

LYNN BREZOSKY AND NEDRA PICKLER

Associated Press

Corpus Christi, Tex. — The 78-year-old lawyer who was shot by U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney in a hunting accident has some birdshot lodged in his heart and he had a “a minor heart attack” Tuesday morning, hospital officials said.

The victim, Harry Whittington, was immediately moved back to the intensive-care unit for further treatment, said Peter Banko, the administrator at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial in Texas.

Mr. Banko said there was an irregularity in the heartbeat caused by a pellet, and doctors performed a cardiac catheterization. Mr. Whittington expressed a desire to leave the hospital, but Mr. Banko said he would probably stay for another week to make sure more shot does not move to other organs or to other part of his body.

“Some of the bird shot appears to have moved and lodged into part of his heart in what we would say is a minor heart attack,” Mr. Banko said in a news conference outside the hospital.

The doctors said Mr. Whittington did not experience symptoms of a heart attack or any other problems. They left the birdshot in place and said he could live a healthy life with it there.

David Blanchard, chief of emergency care, called it “a silent heart attack, an asymptomatic heart attack. He's not had a heart attack in the traditional sense.”

White House physicians who attended to Whittington at the scene after Mr. Cheney accidentally shot him were involved in the treatment, the officials said.

Mr. Whittington had initially been placed in intensive care after the accident Saturday evening. He had been moved to a “step-down unit” Monday after doctors decided to leave several birdshot pellets lodged in his skin rather than try to remove them.

A Texas Parks and Wildlife Department report said Whittington was retrieving a downed bird and stepped out of the hunting line he was sharing with Mr. Cheney. “Another covey was flushed and Cheney swung on a bird and fired, striking Whittington in the face, neck and chest at approximately 30 yards,” the report said.

The wildlife department issued a report Monday that found the main factor contributing to the accident was a “hunter's judgment factor.” No other secondary factors were found to have played a role.

The department gave Mr. Cheney and Mr. Whittington warning citations for breaking Texas hunting law by failing to buy a $7 stamp allowing them to shoot upland game birds. A department spokesman said warnings are being issued in most cases because the stamp requirement only went into effect five months ago and many hunters weren't aware of it.

Mr. Cheney's office said Monday night in a statement that the Vice-President had a $125 nonresident hunting licence and has sent a $7 cheque to cover the cost of the stamp. “The staff asked for all permits needed, but was not informed of the $7 upland game bird stamp requirement,” the statement said.

what i dont understand is the media uproar over how long it took for the media to alerted of this. they keep saying 24 hours but it wasnt really even that long was it?

is there a double standard when it comes democrats and repulicans?
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1996/news/9608/27/whitewater/index.shtml

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, Aug. 27) -- The same day Hillary Clinton was scheduled to speak at the Democratic National Convention, newly released documents suggest she was behind the 30-hour delay in releasing late White House counsel Vincent Foster's suicide note to authorities.

How the White House handled Foster's 1993 death, and the possibility that administration officials improperly removed documents from his office or impeded an official search of it, has been the subject of intense scrutiny by congressional Republicans and the media.

The newly released memo, written by White House lawyer Miriam Nemetz, quotes then-White House chief of staff Mack McLarty as saying Mrs. Clinton "was very upset and believed the matter required further thought and the president should not yet be told" about Foster's note.

According to the document, Mrs. Clinton "said they should have a coherent position and should have decided what to do before they told the president."

That contradicts sworn testimony to the Senate Whitewater Committee from Clinton staffers that the first lady had no role whatsoever in the handling of Foster's note.

An attorney for McLarty said today his client had only conferred with former White House counsel Bernard Nussbaum on the matter, and that at no time had he dealt with Mrs. Clinton.

Nussbaum also promptly released a statement saying, "No one suggested to me that the first lady had any view with respect to how the Foster note should be handled. It was my decision to delay, for one day, producing the note, so that the president...could have an opportunity to view it first."

Administration Whitewater counsel Mark Fabiani said in a statement the newly disclosed information was unreliable, since it "passed through five different people before it was ever taken down in a lawyer's notes."

Republicans have been baffled over why the president wasn't told about Foster's note for 30 hours when the first lady knew about it immediately.

I had a friend who had a minor heart attack. he said all he felt was a small pain in his chest. is the heart attack thing being blown out of proportion?

i heard a psychic make a prediction for this year saying that there would be some people in bushs adminstration resigning this year. if harry should die i could see the vp stepping down.

Knowing Cheney's temper, could be the guy just pissed him off. Or maybe the lawyer told him the wire taps were illegal?

Maybe the US is safer when Cheney is isolated in a secure location.

Don't ban guns, ban Cheney.

If the situation was reversed, and Mr. Whittington had accidentally shot VP Cheney, would the Secret Service have shot Mr. Whittington multiple times? One wonders how the Secret Service could distinguish an accidental shooting from an assassination attempt..
