Canada allows Sikh knives in school

There are some serious questions to think about. What's to stop a kid of eastern descent who isn't a sikh from getting ahold of a kirpan and bringing it to school with the intention to use it as a weapon?
If he was to bring a knife to school with the intent to harm someone,he would bring it regardless of what the rules are.Schools dont check your pockets everytime you enter them.

I read the article but I didn't see where it said he was born in another country and moved to Canada. Can you show me please?
I live in Quebec and this story has been going on for 2 years so I know a few things about it :p Well that's what they said on CTV 2 years ago...

well from my knowledge, the kirpan is required to be worn at all times. By not allowing them to wear the kirpan, we tread over their right to freedom of religion and right to education (if they feel like they cannot go to school because of their religious practices).
Is that more important than the safety of students? Clearly it's not on aeroplanes, where Sikhs comply with safety standards and remove their kirpans. Other sikh kids at this school do not wear kirpans. It's called compromise.

Where would you draw the line with this kind of thing? Would you, as someone else said, allow kids to bring loaded guns to school, if they were "symbols" against oppression? What if I have an axe that symbolises the hard work and perseverance of my lumberjack ancestors, can I not carry that around with me as a 'symbol'.

Also the kirpan is only used AS A SYMBOL, a reminder to fight oppression and for justice, they cannot use it as a weapon.
Of course he can. His religion may forbid it, but that doesn't physically stop him from using it as a weapon. Not to mention the fact that someone else could take it from him and use it as a weapon.

True, but most of the time, if someone is bringing a weapon into school they conceal it. If you have "religious permission" theres no need to conceal it. But you do have a point. I think there are good points on either side of this issue, which is why it should have been discussed more

Like Prince Mack said, theres nothing stopping a kid, no matter what religion, to bring a weapon to a school and hurt/kill someone. If the kirpan is not allowed in schools, other religious symbols should also not be allowed, its only fair

Well I wouldn't go that far. Thats whats great about countries like Canada, you area llowed to practice whatever religion you choose. I just don't think its appropriate to have a knife at school, whether it's for religious reasons or not.
that's what I ment actually by "follow the rules" :)

Anyways, Canada came in Croatia to get me out of there, so the least I can do is eat maple syrup with my pancakes! :D

Really?!?!?! Most public schools here not only have metal detectors, they also have the machines you run your backpack through so they can see if anything is in there, then once you go through the metal detector, they still pat you down. . .

LMAO

Who cares about this tho, seriously. Schools provide kids with weapons all the time, Exacto knives for screen printing, knives in home ec., half the stuff in the wood work/metals/autos labs in schools, r weapons. So wut the kid carrys around a small ass knife, if thers a kid thats crazy enough to use it as a weapon, hed be crazy enough to use many other things if he cant bring that to school

you live in the US. In Hamilton (where i live) there are very few highschools/colleges with metal detectors, I don't know about any other cities. I was carrying a swiss army knife from grade 10 to grade 12 and now carry a leatherman in college, never had anyone hassle me about it

ya, its the same in winnipeg, i brought my paintball gun into school, with the end of it sticking out of my bag, if a teacher saw me walk down the halls, they'd no for sur. It would very easy to sneak a gun or other weapon into my school if someone wanted too

While I wouldn't argue against it, banning crucifixes or Stars or David isn't the same as banning the kirpan. Knives are banned in schools, the kirpan is a knife, it makes sense.

As for anyone being allowed to bring knives into school, that's not an argument. You can't say "anyone could sneak a knife into school, so we might as well just let them carry them around".

Just because someone is religious doesn't mean they should be exempt from all the rules and laws of society. At the end of the day a religion is just a set of beliefs, and no matter how much I explain to people that I believe in walking around with a chainsaw and a hockey mask, no court is going to let me do so in school.

But you don't follow the same religion :p

I don't think it should be allowed in school. A weapon is a weapon and if they can be without it on other occasions (such as on airplanes etc) then why not at school too? They can still wear it at home as much as they like.

At the end of the day it all goes back to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, telling them they can't wear something (which is part of their religion) is against their rights.

Have a few million people walk around with chainsaws and hockey masks for a few hundred years and then we'll see if its a religion

Wow...not the Sikhs are abusing.... They are taking the autorities of Montreal's Port, because they oblige Sikhs who work there to wear security helmets during work hours...

Ya, i heard about that. It's a big deal here. I'd drop a log on their head and ask them if they'd want the helmet now.
