Now before I write anything else let me state that I reckon Barack Obama is a champion and I have nothing but the up most respect for him and I see him as nothing short than an honorable man who I would have voted for had I lived in the States.
Now to my theory and I have no doubts this is why Obama chose the dog that he did. I usually don't make theories especially like this but it seems logical to me. I was born in Portugal and I find it funny and appropriate. It shows how smart and witty Obama really is.
Over 500 years ago the Portuguese were the 1st Europeans to sail from Europe to discover the new world, America's and Africa onto India and Asia. The Portuguese basically opened the doors to the age of discovery for the rest of Europe. They were able to accomplish these feats before any other European nation for a prolonged amount of time due to the innovation of their Caravels (ships) which were the best ships to travel long distances over the open Atlantic and Indian oceans at that point of time.
Anyways to my theory because the Portuguese were the 1st European nation to commence the age of discovery, they were also the 1st nation to enslave Africans. As a result they were the originators of the slave trade where they would send African slaves to Brazil and back to Portugal long before the English, Spanish, Dutch or French would commence their own slave trades or for that matter even sail out of their respected countries.
Now even though time would prove that those other aforementioned European nations would be more ruthless towards that slaves then the Portuguese, the matter of fact is the Portuguese started the trade. Many black people/nations suffered for a long time due to the trade and it's effects can somewhat still be felt today.
Now fast forward 500 years and Barack Obama, a black man, is the president of America and with that the ruler of the free world. He promises his daughters a dog when he gets into the white house. He chooses the breed of dog carefully and ends up with a Portuguese water dog. This isn't Barack taking a stab at the Portuguese by any means but rather the way the world has changed and how long we have come as a society and a race.
500 years ago the Portuguese ruled the world because of their superior sailing technology and took the 1st black slaves away from Africa treating them as nothing short of dogs.
I've gained even more respect for Obama for this and I am Portuguese by blood. Very intelligent and witty and I'm sure most people would think of it as just another dog owned by another man. But the significance is much greater.
