Glad the Aussies got through, they normally seem to fall at the last hurdle. You do realise this is one sports tournament you won't actually get to the final with though!? :D

Yea gratz Australia, but I still don't think Penalties should be used to decide the winner in competitions like this, give me the silver /golden goal anyday.

I'm glad for Australia and all... but its only the qualifying match... the way everyone is carrying on, you'd think they won a tournament or something. No, just qualified. Now its gonna get much harder.... what's coming up will be the real test...

Australia will get knocked out first round, so this is all the celebration they'll have, we're just making the most of it while it lasts :D.

Amara, for many of the diehards, last nights game was as good as winning it.

I read somewhere this morning, Australian's are celebrating as Brazilian's would if they won the tournament.

You have to remember the years and years and years of dissapointment. Performing credibly against Argentina yet missing out, Being 2-0 ahead of Iran in front of 100,000 at the MCG ... Yet still missing out, the choke in Montevideo in 2001 ... I have to tell you, I was nearly in tears last night. Ever since I was 10 years old and first watched the World Cup held in Italy and couldn't understand why Australia wasn't there... Last nights game was the culimnation of all that pent up desire.

Even if we perform credibly and get beaten in all of our pool games in June, this is a start. We then move into Asia and will continue to improve with better competition, more often (It's likely a lot of the Asian Cup matches will be played with local palyers, not European based ones)... Last nights game marks the beginning of the new era for Australian Football.

No matter what happens in June, I am damn proud of the boys.

Yeah I can understand it and I'm proud too. Still, I'd be cautious of putting too much emphasis on this victory rather than further preparation. I suppose they realise the hype is temporary though.

Oh I definately agree, the way I see it the rigging of the draw is a good thing. There will certainly be a team in our group such as an England, Brazil, Germany, Italy who we will struggle against, however once you move off that top tier, I certainly think we are capable of winning enough pool games to make the second round. Two years ago, we competed for a half against a full strength English side (The other half was played by kids on their part). The best part is the coach now has 7 months to work out the best possible defensive line up we need (Still by far and away a huge weakness - Brazil would have put 10 goals past us last night).

All I am saying is, whilst there may be some dissapointment if we lose all our games ... It won't be the end of the world, because a new era is dawning on the game.

Especially now that the A League has replaced the NSL and the teams can be embraced by all rather than just Croatians (Melbourne Knights - ak Melbourne Croatia) or just Italian's like the old Adelaide City for example. The new teams are our cities teams.

At the moment the only thing in sport that could top last night for me is Richmond winning the premiership or Cinci winning the Superbowl :)

^^ I totally agree. I mean up until this point, Australia never really had a proper soccer leauge to cultivate talent. 8 years from now, shit, maybe even 4, we will be a strong side. And as part of the Asia division now, we wont need to qualify against those pesky South Americans heheh, but I really think that a couple world cups down the track, even if we needed to, it wouldnt be that much of a worry.

Any of you Aussies Perth Glory fans? You've got our (Blackpool FC's) old manager, Steve McMahon. Any chance you could send him back? Our new one has just been fired for being shite and McMahon is a god!

Nup,

At worst, if we fall into a play-off situation, we will have to play the 4th placed North & Central-American team (I thik - From memory the top 3 qualify and the 4th placed goes into a playoff with the 4th or 5th Asian side).

This year the N & C American team that went into the playoffs was Trinidad & Tobago ... Would much rather play them than Sth Americans ;-)
