Its Samsung's turn to reveal some benchmark results for their latest devices. S2 uses the latest processor, produced by Samsung themselves, called Exynos 4210 (read more about it here), which used to be also known as Orion. Like most other dual-core designs of today, this SoC also uses ARM's Cortex A9 design so for CPU intensive tasks, you can expect similar results as the devices based on NVIDIA Tegra 2. Exynos 4210 will also use a new GPU, called Mali 400 which has been much hyped in the past, claiming several times the performance improvement over already excellent Power GSX540. Will Samsung meet this lofty expectation?
Oddly enough, we have TWO entries for Galaxy S2. Why?

Looking at the database of Smartbench 2011, we found two variety of S2, and both claim to be "Galaxy S2" - "GT-I9100" and "SHW-M250S". Quick search on Google reveals that both are model names for Galaxy S2. But the latter brings up a lot of Korean sites. Destined for two different continents? Not sure. But for some reason, there's performance disparity between these two, so I've listed them separately.

Lets look at the results:

..........

There were 4 results collected for GT-I9100" and only 2 results for "SHW-M250S" but "SHW-M250S" results were much more recent.

Productivity Index numbers are certainly very competitive as expected. It is especially impressive for the "SHW-M250S" variant, but keep in mind that this is an average value for only 2 runs.

What about Games Index? There has been some preliminary benchmark results circulating on the internet on the S2 and they have not been very impressive for Samsung's latest GPU - Mail 400. It is no different here. At least their latest variation "SHW-M250S" shows some promise, getting closer to Tegra 2, but it is still behind even their own Hummingbird's PowerSGX540! Could Samsung have been mislead to believe that ARM's GPU solution is more competitive than it is in reality?

Conclusion:

Samsung's latest dual-core effort - Exynos 4210, has been a mixed bag so far. Their CPU intensive numbers look very good but the GPU numbers are less than impressive. But if these (very small samples of tests) are any indications, they are certainly improving. Are there any room for further improvements before the immanent release of the S2? We will find out soon.

I don't understand. Gingerbread's launcher doesn't take up any more real estate than FroYo.... and if he's using a clean CyanogenMod7 which I understand he is, then he'd be using ADW anyhow unless he installed another Launcher and set it as default. I personally stick with LauncherPro as it's the fastest and has the most features.

im on adw, i meant the columns and rows etc. i have now set this back to 5 columns and 6 rows, with lcd density set to 220. this is more spacious now.

does launcher pro allow for columns and rows to be set like ADW does? i want more space for icons on the home screens.

I think I can remember you not really liking it :)

btw. I've heard that HTC refuses to upgrade their "older" phones to Sense UI 3.0. By "older" they mean Desire S and Incredible S too. The first phone that will get it is HTC Sensation.
My initial thought when they released Desire S and Incredible S was that they don't really differ from last year's models, which was very weird from HTC. Looks like they were out of ideas so they wanted to increase the life span of their older models. It looks like this is also how they see these phones.

Yeah, it does.

And Masta, I forget but you're probably right. It's a lot better than it used to be. The first time I tried it, ADW was still better. Now LauncherPro is much better.

LauncherPro and ADW are basically the same to me. Only thing that gives LauncherPro the edge for me is the scrollable dock. I don't like how ADW does it. Then LauncherPro's messaging, calendar, facebook and gmail widgets lol. ADW looks better, like the app drawer being able to be transparent is way better than the plain black that LauncherPro has. But that is one of the many reasons that LauncherPro seems a bit snappier. ADW is almost too bloated with its features. They're both the best launchers android has to offer though

LauncherPro and ADW may be similar performance wise on newer phones, but I recently put CM7 on my cousins HTC Hero and LauncherPro is noticeably faster than ADW. I don't like the transparent app tray, I like the 3D tray like stock Android has, which you can enable in LP. You might be able to do that with ADW now as well, but for a long time you could do it on LP but not ADW.

They also just added the ability to skin the LP widgets in the new release. Which is cool even though I don't actually use any of them right now lol.

How many people in yalls families are rocking Android now? It's pretty interesting in that you could say my own family is a microcosm for the growth of Android worldwide since the beginning, because obviously people close to me started buying Android on my recommendation, people close to them started to on their recommendation, etc, etc. In my family, it's

Me: Started with G1, now using G2 and NookColor
Wife: Started with G1, now using HTC Thunderbolt
Cousin: HTC Hero (looking to upgrade soon to Nexus S)
Cousin: HTC Desire x 2 (two different cousins both have Desire)
Cousin: Samsung Galaxy S x 2 (two different cousins have Galaxy S)
Uncle: Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

That's just my close family, there may be some others that I'm missing. And if I list friends we'll be here all day, but my closest friend who I've known the longest has an LG Optimus One.
