Villa in the papers - we lost petrov to a shoulder dislocation injury last night :(:

Daily Star: Martin O'Neill admits Aston Villa need to sign five players or risk stretching their threadbare squad to breaking point this season.

Mirror: Aston Villa are poised to make a £12m move for West Ham defender Matthew Upson.

Independent: Darren Bent is attracting interest from Aston Villa although Sunderland remain the favourites to sign the England international who is completely out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur.

Daily Mail: Aston Villa are monitoring Robbie Keane's situation at Tottenham following Peter Crouch's £9m move to White Hart Lane from Portsmouth.

Upson for £12m?!! NOOO! i hate upson and he is not worth more than £3m at the most to be honest. I'd rather have distin. But i want MON to sign Delph. Ive not seen him play before but ive only heard many good things about him. Upson takes it up the arse.

Alonso hands in transfer request. why couldnt he have done this earlier in the summer if he was so intent on leaving. He will be a loss but theres talks of Liverpool signing Aquiliani from ROma to replace him. he is a good player too.

I think it's funny that English subtop teams, with all their spending power relative to other European subtop teams, manage to spend horrifying amounts for seriously mediocre players.

Do they even HAVE scouts in England? Does the principle of "go to South America and find a talent" even remotely ring a bell?

Pompey and Kalinic deal fell through. Pompey wanted to pay in installments, Hajduk wasn't interested. The fee ended up being about 6 to 7MIL.

He's linked with Porto now, and more than likely to be heading there... unless Pompey come back with better terms.

Liverpool are also being linked with Cattermole.

What a shit replacement for Alonso that would be.

for some reason, people are starting to say that he is a good prosepect. I cant see anything anyway. He is meant to be a very arrogant guy as well. He is a poor mans Mascherano.

^^he played very well against Shamrock Rovers in that friendly.

Its seems likely that Liverpool will sign Aquiliani if Alonso does go. Stephen Defour is another name being mentioned. He could be a good signing imo. Havent seen much of him but ive heard great things. He is only 21 so he might be a better option than Aquiliani.

I'd love to see VDV (and also Sneijder) at a big club where they'll play.

If it weren't for the fact that his best position is overoccupied at Arsenal, I'd say he would be an ideal signing for them.

I don't think he'd be good for 'Pool. They don't really use a player like him imo. And it's rape to shove him into a "serving" position.

VDV is honestly one of the world's best "true 10's". But his capability is limited. He's not a masterful solo'ist nor a physically frightening work machine, his game really lies into his passing and reading a match. It's subtle, but God can he be good.

We just solved the puzzle. VDV should go to Man U. Who do they really have as attacking midfielders with superb quality? Nani and Anderson are too young and not (yet) good enough. Carrick and Fletcher are more defensively minded. Scholes is getting old and Giggsy (SIR Giggsy) IS old.

VDV would be an excellent signing. Put Carrick and Fletcher as debris clearers on a 3 man midfield, with VDV on 10. Berba centrally on the attack, Rooney one on of them flanks, one of those young blackies on the other.

Good side.
