08/09 Summer Transfer Window Thread

Cantona was a premiership great but on a world stage he achieved nothing.
Well he didn't get much of a chance. He missed Italia '90 because France failed to qualify, he missed USA '94 because France failed to qualify, he missed Euro '96 because he was suspended for the qualifiers and the team was built around Zidane in his absence.

In the one major tournament he did play in, Euro '92, France failed to win any of their three group games.

Yeah but this about the best Premiership player ever, not what he did on the World stage.

Roy Keane played in USA 94 right? I dont think he played in another major international tournament.

And what about all the players who never got a chance to play in a World Cup? Georgie Best being the obvious name.

Di Stefano is another one, missing out on four tournaments

1950: Argentina pull out before qualification, along with several other teams
1954: Di Stefano is banned from playing (though Argentina didn't enter anyway) because he'd played for both Argentina and Colombia. That ruling is later overturned and Di Stefano gets Spanish citizenship
1958: Spain fail to qualify
1962: He helps Spain qualify, but gets injured before the tournament and retires

well thats what i said. he did nothing on a world stage. He never did a whole lot in the champs league either. My biggest memory of him playing in Europe was pulling out of a tackle, which led to the concession of a goal in the 97 champions league semi final against Borussia Dortmund.

Best played for Northern Ireland so how was he supposed to play in a world cup?But he did win the European Cup and is considered one of the best footballers ever.

Keane played at USA 94 which is still one more than Cantona played in. He was named Irelands player of the tournament. We got to the second round after beating Italy which was pretty good for a nation with a population of 4 million people. He was always a excellent player for Ireland. We reached the play-offs for Euro 96, France 98 and Euro 2000 losing the latter two narrowly. If it wasnt for Keane we would not have qualifed for the 2002 World Cup. He was unbelievable in those qualifiers, scoring numerous vital goals. He was outstanding. It was a shame he didnt play at that World Cup because we would got further than the second round. He was vital player for Man Utd, winning 7 leagues, 4 fa cups and driving to a champions league final in 99. It was sad that he missed that final but he took a booking for the team after destroying Juventus and bringing Man Utd back from the dead. He was a far more important player for Man Utd than Cantona ever was.

Di Stefano? 5 European Cups in a row. 1 Copa America.3 times World player of the year? nuff said.

I agree that Cantona was a great PREMIERSHIP player but he doens't even register when i think of world greats.

Looks like the 7 MIL Euro Ajax Argentinian/Croat boy Dario Cvitanich has chosen to represent Croatia.

Don't know how I feel about it. He said he'd be honoured to represent the country of his grandfather, but then he stated he knows he wouldn't get a call from Argentina. Dunno where his heart lays....

Looks like Alonso is staying put thank god. Has Crouch signed for Portsmouth yet. I wish he would stay. He has been a good player for Liverpool. he has always done well when he played.

I hope so. Him leaving is a bit of a worry to be honest.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if he spent a couple of years at Portugal and then came back in time to take over as the number one at United.

Yea Crouch signed for Porstmouth.

Villa agree fee for American GK Brad Guzan.

Chelsea reject Inter bids for Lampard.

Apparently Arsenal are trying to hijack Liverpool's bid for Barry and may add in a fringe player as a sweetener.

Y'all probably don't give a hoot about the Dutch league, but Heerenveen's Miralem Sulejmani (decent talent, had 1 good season with 'Veen) signed for Ajax for (lmao) 16.25 million Euro's.

Coupled with the Alves move this season, H'veen is now officially filthy rich, haha.

^^i dunno, they paid an awful lot for him. id say Crouch to Portsmouth or Sampdoria signing Cassano for less than 5 million on a permanent deal(i hope so anyway).

Dos Santos at Spurs is another interesting one although i doubt his character so he may be a flop.

Steve Sidwell is a good signing for Villa. Just look at how big of a loss he was to Reading last season. got no chance at Chelsea.

Sulejmani is a good player but hell, he barely played a full season. There's no way someone in their right mind would pay such an amount for a player theyve only seen for a few months.

Coupled to the fact that Ajax' policy has always been not to lay down big numbers for players (well, thats broken now isnt it?), it's pretty hilarious. Now, if Ajax would decide to shell out massively for a player they really need, sure, go for it. Personally I've always been for buying two or three good players instead of 6 mediocre ones for the same money.

The point is, if you've seen Ajax last (and previous) season(s), you'd know that offense is not their problem, lol. They're rolling in attackers. THey need a solid last man or an outstanding midfielder. If they put down 15 million for one of those I might be in this thread waxing lyrically about the comeback of Dutch club football.

But despite the fact I rate Sulejmani, it seems that Ajax is still squandering their millions on dubious purchases. Exactly like they have done the previous, what? 10 years?
