Yeah, Casey, but spending the extra 2 seconds to type up a text message is not a big deal to me because I don't have groupies like you.

Everybody is going the touch interface route so you better hop on that bandwagon now.

Each to their own. But for the record, my cousin has a touch-only Android device (the HTC Hero)......and it shits on the iPhone.

Anyone that actually uses their phone as a communications device and not just to look cool will never give up a physical keyboard for a touch-only device. Fact.

^I know quite a few "professionals" who work at Microsoft, Deloitte, Boeing, Starbucks...and they're satisfied with their iPhones for all the shit they have to do.

but shit, i was surprised too that they didn't use blackberries.

That is not a fact, but an opinion. I just got an email from AT&T about the LG Neon and the marketing line was "Text like a Pro" which reminded me of some bullshit that you'd come up with.

I keep saying it but fixed keys are a limitation. You can't switch keys to suit the application you're running. I use a handwriting recognition in my Japanese dictionary app often - imagine the limitation I'd have if I was using an physical English keyboard.

So, Android shits on the iPhone interface - great. That strengthens my point. Apple will release the tablet next year. Other companies will follow shortly after. Windows will go touch and you will be using a touch keyboard in the not so distant future and come in here saying how anyone who's serious about communication would get [insert non-Apple touch interface OS].

Congrats.
Have a nice day.

You're still here with your bullshit? Give it up already.

Yes, you have your ONE valid point regarding switching keys for the application. First of all, it's only a minority of people that would need this. Second of all, that's why I have a G1. It has a touch interface as well as a physical keyboard. The touch interface is cool, but I barely use it.

Apple's tablet looks like shit. Oooohhhh a massive rectangular iPhone. Fucking great.

Aside from their epic fails at technology, any company that puts so much pressure on their workers that a man would kill himself after losing a prototype product, disgusts me.

Apple are running scared of Android and rightly so. Now that Eric Schmidt (Google CEO) stepped down from the Apple board of directors, Apple are fucked. Google were going easy on them before because of this strange relationship. Now, Eric will be telling his people to fuck them up at every opportunity.

Chrome OS + Android spells the end of Mac OSX + iPhone OS, and even my cousin who has been an Apple fanboy since 1988 has admitted this and got himself an Android phone after demoing both it, and the iPhone3GS.

1999: iMac has no floppy drive. It sucks.
2009: iPhone doesn't have a keyboard. It sucks.

Luckily, people who make these devices have better grip on the future of communication than you do.

For the tablet, there hasn't been a single confirmed photo of the tablet so your hate is unfounded.

Unless you can provide me with evidence that shows Apple had a direct involvement with the said interrogation, you are making your mind up based on hearsay. And you probably have at least one Foxconn component in your possession so why don't you go kill yourself?

It really doesn't matter what Google does if Apple keeps doing what they do. In contrast, it's actually the other companies who are keeping a close eye on Apple. Fortunately for you, you have finally found your favorite iPhone killer.

On a side note - I predict that the tablet will go for $900. The Kindle DX is at around $500. Comparable tablets with inferior OS goes for about $1000. So, please save your breath about how expensive it is.

You're comparing a floppy drive to a keyboard? LMAO! Can you reach any further or do you need a bionic arm?

Actually, I would wager I have a better grip on the future of communication than Apple do since they keep making fail products.

I'm fully aware there hasn't been a confirmed photo of the tablet. But it's not hard to guess what it's gonna look like - a giant rectangular iPhone. Probably with one button. It doesn't take Einstein to figure out that that is what they are doing. And you know, it might be cool. But you'd still be better off getting a Dell Mini 9 and hacking it to run OSX. Especially if the tablet runs some crappy extended version of the iPhone OS rather than the full OSX experience.

I never said anything about an interrogation. The fact is that the guy worked for the company that makes Apple's products, he was entrusted with an important prototype which he lost and then he killed himself. The facts speak for themselves. And no, I don't own any Foxconn components.

It doesn't matter what Google does? You won't be saying that when Chrome OS takes OSX market share, just as Android is taking iPhone's market share right about now. Android had a 900% growth rate in the last 12 months with ONE phone on the market (the G1). Now there are five Android phones on the market (G1, HTC Magic, HTC Dream/G2 Touch, Samsung Galaxy and Dell's new Android based phone that just came out in China) and by the end of the year there will be more than 15, including at least 3 more HTC devices, three devices from Motorola, Huawei, and a few other manufacturers. Not to mention MID's running Android, in-car entertainment systems running Android, netbooks running Android.

Google has absolutely no competitors right now. The future of computing is in clouds and web apps and that's already clearly evident. People already want phones that replicate their experience in front of a computer. Where is Apple's cloud? Don't mention MobileMe (fail) or you'll get laughed off the forum. What happens if Google decide to block YouTube from the iPhone? Obviously they won't since it's a nice source of revenue. But they could, easily. Same with Google Maps. Once Google Wave hits, everyone will be using that instead of email, and you can bet that Android will have a much nicer integration with it than iPhone.

Apple really shouldn't have blocked Google Voice from the App Store. That was an insane move, that even made hardcore Apple fanboys like Michael Arrington switch to Android. Have a read of this, if you haven't already.

It is this hardcore policing of the App store that is the beginning of Apple's downfall. I mean, Qik just launched on the iPhone. I've had Qik on Android for a month or two now and it's great. If you don't know what it is, it's an app for live streaming. You can do live video streams from wherever you are.

But due to Apple policing - the iphone Qik app CANNOT:

A) do live streams - prerecord your video, then upload. UMMM HELLO APPLE, THE WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF QIK IS FOR LIVESTREAMING.

b) do anything over 3G. Wifi only.

So if you're out and about doing your thing, you have to rely on a Wifi connection just to upload your pre-recorded video? you can't live stream at all, and you can't upload your video to even get a close resemblance of live streaming unless there happens to be a Wifi signal nearby?

Regardless of how anyone feels about Apple, THAT IS FUCKING PATHETIC.

On my Android Qik app, I can live stream over both 2G, 3G and Wifi. I can choose not to live stream, and pre-record then edit the video before it goes online. I can 1-click update my Twitter, YouTube, Facebook accounts with the new video.

Hey apple, if I want to livestream with Qik, is there an app for that? Big fat nope.

You see where I'm going here?

The funny thing is that I've sort of become an online Apple hater because of this debate. The reality is I don't hate Apple and I've said it before. I like Mac's. I like OSX. I like iTunes as a program, although I don't use it and find there to be better media players. I like some of the native OSX apps although the UI seems to take priority over functionality (Apple in a nutshell).
I dislike the iPhone. I dislike what Apple have become in regards to their App store and policing it. I dislike the attempted monopolization of the digital music industry from a corporation that was court-ordered to STAY OUT of the music industry by the greatest pop band of all time.

Apple's bad attitude is driving away even their loyal fans. And it's no-one else's fault but their own.

In regards to your last paragraph, I do feel that generally, Apple's products are overpriced for what they are. You're paying extra for a streamlined style and pleasant UI's. And that's fine for the people that don't really care about their technology. But I know better than to fork out a couple hundred dollars more for an inferior product.

What comparable tablets with inferior OS's are you talking about? I don't know much about the tablet market but given Apple's history, I doubt this will be the case by the time the tablet comes out. There'll be technically superior tablets running better OS's for cheaper, but probably be less aethetically pleasing. That's the name of the game and just how it goes with Apple.

The reason why floppy drives where taken out, is not only because the technology was on its way out, but because the engineers envisioned a system of wireless distribution of information when most of us were using 56k modems. Still not there yet but Steve Jobs is persistent, and that's evident in the lack of extra ports or an optical drive in the MacBook Air. (There are other factors as well, like materials used, footprint and structural integrity)

So, when I say that you'll be using touch keyboard in your future phone isn't a fanboy talk. It's going to happen and professional and amateurs alike will have not have issues using a touch keyboard to communicate efficiently.

The rest I did not care to read.

Well that's just horsecrap. It was taken out because it was made obselete by something better. First an optical drive. Now that is obselete because of removable flash memory. What next, you'll tell me that people will no longer need any physical method of transferring information? We're still a number of years away from that happening and it's dependent on everywhere having fast data connections, which you can't make a guarantee of.

So, when I say that you'll be using touch keyboard in your future phone isn't a fanboy talk. It's going to happen and professional and amateurs alike will have not have issues using a touch keyboard to communicate efficiently.
You know, I'm actually willing to accept this. But we're still a way away from it. The HTC Virtual Keyboard is far and away the best VK on the market. It's leaps and bounds ahead of the iPhone. But I still don't use it. Why? Because it still takes at least 3x as long to type the same damn thing compared to using the physical keyboard. I mean, I'm fairly willing to admit that I'm not your average user. my WPM speed on a PC keyboard is around 65 and on my G1 it's comparable, because it's a full QWERTY keyboard. I've often surprised people with how quickly I text or type messages on my phone. But hey, time is money and I already have a fairly constant stream of emails to reply to, tweets to make, SMS' etc etc etc etc etc.

Perhaps for someone that doesn't type quickly and frequently and doesn't have always have a backlog of things to do at all times, it's not such a big deal. I'm willing to entertain that thought. But that person is not me and not many other people I know. I try to send one text using the virtual keyboard and half way through I feel like I'm wasting time.

The rest I did not care to read.
Translation - I don't have a good rebuttal to your very valid points and therefore concede defeat :amuse:

iPhone users and the majority of people who are brainwashed by apple's marketing are those who think that the iPhone can do everything and the only phone to do what it does.

it ws quite annoying when someone in the office today was showing everyone the shazam app which detects music and gives you details of the song/artist/album name(s) etc. he was making out as though only the iphone has apps and only the iphone has shazam. he's paying approx £40 a month and paid £90 for the handset (24 month contract).

everyone in the office was like "OMG ive definately got to get an iphone now". "can you get me a discount if you refer me?" answer to that is a big fat "NO!". O2 promote the iphone way too much and think its so great that they dont give any discount on it or give you a good package to bundle with the phone. moreover, there's been many cases of iphones overheating and legally, the consumer gets the blame.

many people have said it before... the iphone has only just brought basic functions over to the device and the OS such as copy/paste/3MP camera and video recording etc...

the G1/GTC Dream did all of those 6-9months in advance and is the original htc android device so to think the improvements they will be making if they already set that benchmark for apple to catch up with.

one guy was like "you can also get tom-tom sat nav on it for £60!!" well, you can buy a lifetime sat nav service in combination with google maps for approx £20 on android devices."

everything they were coming up with i could think of everything that android does better.

my question is that with one device (predominantly the G1), android has obtained 12% market share of smartphone OS's in one whole year. more phones in future will be running the android OS, so of course we can expect market share to further increase (like that of firefox against IE). but can android actually overtake apple's market share and sustain it with the number of people who are already brainwashed into apple's marketing and are clueless to what is actually important/value for money or has more potential?

p.s. apple's OS is limited because it will only run on apple devices unless they sell their shares, merge with another developer and rebrand the OS whilst keeping the features it contains. in comparison to that, android is universal as it can be found on more than just htc devices e.g. sony ericsson, htc, motorola, samsung and expect more on the way.

when i went to the t-mobile store they said that the G1 can do everything and more than the iphone (3GS). they were wrong...

the iphone can fool you into believing its the best device/value for money;
iphone can overheat, like itself, causing you be at fault;
no keyboard;
terrible battery life;
locked down software and limited capabilities;
paying more than double for the handset than the G1;
paying more for the contract than t-mobile's G1.

to be honest, the only advantage apple has over android is that the major companies are developing apps for the iphone because it will get a better reception and more revenue if available on a currently more active/popular device/app store.

i wish i had apps for sky news, sky sports, rightmove, bloomberg, official facebook app amongst others.

however, G1 is much better than the iphone and im very happy with my choice!!

right now, im feeling like preach must do after he submits his posts.

The official android facebook app is in development at the moment, but take a look at the app called "Bloo" - it fits all my Facebook needs perfectly.

As you said, Android has 12% market share right now with the G1. But, before the next report comes out, we will see figures from:

HTC Magic/T-Mobile MyTouch3G (selling like hot cakes in the US right now)

HTC Hero - the biggest selling phone in the UK right now, bar none, and the most highly anticipated phone in the US, launching on their Sprint network in about a month.

Samsung Galaxy - just launched on O2 in Europe, DEFINATELY taking away iphone market share right now because it's on the same carrier (at least in the UK).

T-Mobile Pulse - smaller Android device just launched on T-Mob UK, appeals to the market that like smaller phones. I can definately see this gaining a lot of fans with it's figure form.

HTC Click - low-end Android phone that won't cost very much and will be available on Pay-As-You-Go/PrePaid contracts. Disadvantage is that it doesn't have wifi - BUT it will most definately get some market share in the young teen crowd, who can't legally take out contracts here in the UK.

Motorola Sholes - supposedly being announced tomorrow at a press conference. This apparently is the first device that will run Android 2.0 - it's also the first Android phone since the G1 to have a physical keyboard, so this will definately be a big seller.

My prediction - 8 months from now Android will have risen in it's market share by another 15%, mainly at the expense of the iPhone (I predict 7% market share drop for Apple), RIM (3% drop) and Symbian (2.5% drop) and WinMo (2.5% drop).

Also - the second round of the Android Developer Challenge has just started. The first round occured prior to the launch of the G1 and saw Google give out $1million in prize money to the best apps. Some of the greatest Android apps available right now came from this, and the second round is going to be even more awesome, as obviously the OS has more capabilities now.

HTC Click is a great idea but damn.. they could work on its looks.
Also it has only basic features (like a 5 year old pda) while going to cost ~300$.
Anyway it's great for those wanting a cheap android smartphone.
