Who benefits from terrorism?

#1
On the news last night were scenes from Bali where citizens were protesting for the death penalty to be inflicted on the terrorists involved in the Bali bombings in 2002, no doubt spawned by the second attacks recently. The effects on the Balinese economy have been substantial and the revenue that was gained through tourism was slowly returning, yet with this second attack (in combination with events such as the tsunami), there are fears that the situation for the citizens of Bali will worsen.

In addition, consider the cultural/religious divide that has been caused as a result of 9/11. Despite the discrepancy between al Qaeda and the heart or true understanding of Islam - terrorism and its messages have caused perceptual damage and general misunderstanding, and as a result worsened the likelihood of pressing issues being resolved, internally and externally.

So I wonder, who benefits from terrorism - not the people of Bali, not Islam... so who? Could say the terrorists themselves, but are their objectives really being achieved....? As a result of 9/11, the United States has an increased presence in the Middle East - is this what al Qaeda wants? Hardly. As a result of the Bali bombings, the economy of Bali has been shot to shit and people's livelihoods ruined - is this what J.I. wants? Doubtful. So who really is benefitting?

Well in regards to Bali, I think the terrorists want to keep tourists out, thats why they attack tourists. So I guess they are getting what they want. As for the individual terrorist, their minds are so polluted that they think doing this will send them to paradise/heaven.

The problem with all of these terrorist groups is that they are driven by hatred and religious reasons so they really do not have a clear set of objectives other than to do what they are doing and make the US or Australia or England or whoever "pay."

But you are right, in reality, all it does is achieve more problems for them, but sometimes I think the average terrorist is just too stupid or sheltered to understand that.

At least with other groups like the IRA, they always had clear political motives, and used attacks to try to achieve those or at least bring international attention to their cause.

This is what I dont understand. The system in Bali relies on tourism, basically it sustains it. Certainly a rational cost-benefit analysis of the effects on Bali were lacking, either that or the bombers simply paid no regard for the livelihood of people of Bali. Also, I guess there is something to be said for the stupidity of tourists as well, one attack, make it two attacks but the fools are still going. Hah, their motto 'don't let the terrorists win' - whereas my motto 'don't let your family suffer' while the Balinese court falters.

Yeah but these terrorists are extremists, in their eyes us non-Islamic/western tourists are a cancer in their country and they think they would be better off with out us. Plus somehow they think it sends a message to our government, which is stupid. But they obviously have something against the Australian government (perhaps its all the aid we send them) because they tried to blow up that Australian embassy building earlier in the year. I mean if you have something against the government, attack the government, why attack innocent people to send a message? We all know they are there. Howard already knows there are terrorists there, I mean, he told Australian's not to travel to Bali but its not like he can stop anyone. They aren't spreading any information or doing anything constructive, just killing innocent people. They have no real rational demands, no real goals, nothing, just murder.

^Probably cause there's alot of shit in Bali that Islam despise.Clubs, prostitutes, etc.
I left Sharm El-Sheikh a day before the bombings.I used to go to all the five places that got bombed the whole time.I could've been hit easily. When I first set foot in Sharm El Sheikh, I was like, it's some extremist-bombing material, as in, it was prone to attacks from extremists. As you may have guessed, the five places I used to go to where mostly tourists and it was clubs, bars, etc.
To them, they're basically cleaning the Muslim world of what they think is its dirt.

Tourism? Nah. It may go deeper than that. Its possible that Bali was a victim of state terrorism with relation to some religious group. Indonesia has always been, anyways. Before it was about communism, but now the motives may have changed.

Bali is not just filled with Western tourism but also with Western economics. Which means Bali's economy is going to be completely exploited. Especially since the tsunami, which really affected the economy, has Bali suffering.

Edit:

Yes, they do have something against Australia! Australia was a big supporter in the state terrorism of Indonesia along with Britian and America 30-40 years ago. Reason being, Australia wanted to make political and economic establishments in Indonesia, they did eventually. Australia is just another entity, along with America and Britain, who wanted Indonesia's economy.

So like I said before, with the advent of the tsunami, Bali's economy will be ruined two times as fast. There is reason to call this state terrorism, this time against the West.

What exactly defines a terrorist. And, are you talking about Bali only or world wide terrorism?

Nobody benefits from terrorism except radical extremists and presidential administrations who have paranoid and insular people supporting them

And please remember the people bombing Bali are Indonesian.
However they are not Balinese
