Try typing random letters in and seeing where it takes you.

I typed V and got taken to a website about domestic Violence.

J took me to JLo's site.

M took me to McD's.

Does anyone know why? Is it a deal with firefox or a bug?

you probably got a "hot keys" thing set up

Yeah but why is it set up to these sites. I've never been to them. And I haven't made any changes to any settings. Try it and see what you get.

They are all big companies.

S = McD's
T = T mobile

We have a firefox conspiracy. They are worse than Gates. :D

The address bar uses Google's I'm Feeling Lucky search.

Like he said. It takes the letter you put in, has it go through Google, and takes you to the first page on Google. There's no conpiracy and Firefox has no control over which websites are shown and neither does Google.

Like others have said, when you type something in the address bar it performs Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" search, taking you to the first page in its rankings.

I'd suggest you change it:

Type about:config in the address bar.
Type browser.search.defaulturl into the Filter field.
Right click the URL under Value and click Modify
Paste one of the following URLs into the box

(Right click on the link, copy link location, then paste into the box)

Google.com search

Amazon.com search

Wikipedia search

Now when you type something in the address bar, it will search Google/Amazon/Wikipedia for what you typed. Saves you having to go to the site and then search. Only problem is, you can't use fullstops or colons.

Finally, this should be in Tech Talk.

I didn't realise it was a legitimate thing. I thought it was just random.

But I moved it. :D

I posted up some Bookmark search strings way back, before the board got hacked. Nobody understood what I was talking about :D

It's a really useful feature.
