The question isn't why close them. The question is why have they been kept open so long? They've been kept open because they are a significant source of jobs for the local communities, and Congress always fights closings. But the overhead for some of these places are excessive and they are poorly utilized. In other words, we don't really need them for the defense of this country. Base closings in 1991, '93, and '95 have saved billions of dollars, and they're going to save billions now. These closings will not affect our forces overseas or our ability to make more messes in the world. In fact, it will free up funds for our overseas messes. Hooray!
