i got two vinyl singles i downloaded off a dude and the filenames are real weird. basically, on one of the singles i can only have some 58 letters and digits in the filenames. for the other single i think the filename caps off at about 30 some letters. if i try to write longer filenames i get a windows error sound every time i hit the keyboard. it's just these two singles.

what do i do?

the files might be corrupted but u mustve thought of that already. what os do u use, vista? i use winamp to edit id3 tags...maybe u should burn the songs and re rip them and then try labeling them again

there is no actual error message.

it's possible that the files are corrupt as they were extracted from a downloaded rar archive, but here's the thing - they play flawlessly. there are no digital skips or otherwise digital errors in the songs themselves. when i try to rename the files, as the filename reaches a certain length (for one of the archives it was about 11 letters, for the other 39 i think, not sure), i am not able to type in anything more. whenever i hit a key on the keyboard i get a windows error beep, and i can only use backspace. if i erase one character, i am able to put one in its place but it definitely caps of at a certain filename length.

i run windows xp sp2.

i am a consistency freak in labeling and sorting my music. these were ripped straight from the respective cd and vinyl singles (by the same person though, both are singles of the same song with slightly diff tracklists) and are top quality. burning and re-ripping would make them transcodes. i'd rather delete them until i find someone who can rip them for me again. i don't want fucked up file names and i don't want transcodes.
