I have a Sony MiniDV DCR-TRV18 camera.

What do I need to have to extract footage from it to my PC? Do I need some IEEE-1394 Firewire cable port thing, or can I just use a USB cable?

nice camera I read that you can use a USB cable to transfer the video to your PC and I am 100 % positive all you need is the right USB cable and any software that you would need you can download from the sony site.

^Thanks guys. The problem is, firewire costs over 30 dollars and I don't feel like buying one. My sister bought one, but for some reason, it can only hook up to her Sony computer because of the weird endings that the cable has. Now, do you guys know what kind of USB cable I need, and whether I can get it in a computer store like Best Buy, Circuit City, etc?

On my camcorder you can't use USB.

I recomend getting firewire as USB will take ages.

If it don't work on USB it means your camcorder is like mine and can only download video by firewire. I don't think yours will work on USB, it's similar to mine.

^Thanks. By the way, I've solved my problem, so to speak. Due to my lack of computer smarts, I wasn't aware of the fact that my laptop does indeed have a digital video port (1394), which is the port for the firewire. The port was just kind of hidden, lol. I got it now.
