The world is getting worse and worse!

Why do people always say that? If they REALLY thought about it, we're living in the best time period ever in human history, lets look at the facts...

Polio, Cholera, hepatitis a, yellow fever, mumps, rubella, measles, smallpox and many other diseases either have vaccines or are completly wiped out now

Women rights and human rights, freedom of religion and free press. Hundreds of years ago questioning the church would have gotten you executed.

Better living conditions and medical knowledge. Just think that 100 years ago millions of people died of diabetes, 1 in 20 women died during child birth, thousands died daily from plague, slavery was acceptable widely.

Fruits and other foods can be bought fresh throughout the seasons, just think that during winters there were no fruits, other foods would either be salted or dried, if the foodstocks were spoiled people starved to death.

War deaths are huge. Only listing 3 wars

Civil War - 700,000 deaths
World War 1 - 59,600,000 deaths (both sides combined)
World War 2 - 61,580,000 deaths (both sides combined)

173,465,000 deaths in 3 wars, millions more died from other wars during those times. There have been less wars in the world today from 10 years ago, more accurate weapons and better tactics cause less civilian deaths. No modern war has come close to the world wars. There will be a Canadian tv show that recreates news programs during WW2 but it will look like it was in modern times, it will be very interesting.

This discussion started first day of college, we had a guest speaker named Rick Green (plays Bill and directs the show The Red and Green Show, wrote and directed history channels History Bites, pitched the idea of the news program during ww2 recreated). While telling us the show idea he described what WW2 was like, his father fought then and said that the news programs were like having WTC happen everyday for 6 years. Is today really worse then 60 years ago?

A big thing that helps the world look worse is the ability of the media to mainly report disasters and the fact that something disasterous can be broadcast right into your home so you feel the situation up close and personal.

I totally agree that the world is a better place to live in these days but I still think that we are miles away from where we should be as humans at this time, there are a lot of things that we need to put right.

is the world a better place? in some places.

Women rights and human rights, freedom of religion and free press still are a big no no in some countries.

When people make comments in regards to the world getting worse, I wonder that they dont mean it as a comparison, because obviously advancements have been made, yet by the same token some issues seem to take on greater significance and therefore in saying the situation is worse, it may serve to reinforce the importance of stimulating change and finding solutions. For instance concern over HIV, Cancer, climate change, pollution, the depletion of the ozone layer, cultural and religious animosity all make us realise that there exists problems and therefore we can and should make positive steps to resolve these issues. If we all sat on our butts and said, yeah things arent bad, they could be worse, we would not improve - we would stagnate. Today may be better than yesterday, but tomorrow could be even better if people arent afraid to be critical and analytical.

I think as our world advances it moves forward with technology and economy and also with evils that people would do with or for it.

All the new horrors make it seem like the world is getting worse because they didn’t exist before. For example if you lived in Japan in 1949 you'd definitely say the world was a far worse place than it was a 100 years ago because ability to inflict pain has drastically escalated. People have always hated each other, but the more we progress the more ways we have to harm one another and the planet.

Sadly, the more power we have over our own existence as a species, the worse the world becomes.

this makes the world better how?

on a less serious note, the world isn't getting worse, it's just becoming a new type of bad so it appears to be getting worse. my problem is that we can figure out how to send harness the energies of atomic particles, but we can't figure out how to feed and care for everyone.

Yeah - the age old dillemma of advancement, it never occurs at an equal rate. "You know it's funny, when it rains it pours / They got money for wars, but can't feed the poor."

You have to look at it from another perspective. Some people believe that creating technological advances that will hopefully ease people's lives in the future are more important than for example, world famine. Personally, I'd rather invent something than make sure five Africans go to sleep with a full stomach. That's what's wrong with the world, but maybe not. What we need is a balance...and I think we have one.

The world is always getting worse and getting better at the same time. It's the way it's always been and it's the way it'll always be.

North Carolina once spent thousands of dollars to research why prisoners want to escape from prison. That's a brilliant use of our money if you ask me. Why build a home for someone when we could ask questions to which we already know the answers.

Oh, and lmao at Amara for editing out the part of my quote about women

ahahaha

the world is getting worse and worse everyday because one gets to know more and more in his/her lifetime.. meaning ur only opening ur eyes more for the disasters. just go outside, look at the sky and the trees and u'll be happy.
