The United States "accidently" bombs Australia

The Mayor of Katherine in the Northern Territory says there is always a degree of nervousness when the US military trains on the region's defence bases.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is investigating why a bomb released from a US Marine Corp F/A-18 Hornet nearly hit a control building at the Delamere Range 150 kilometres west of Katherine on Wednesday night.

No-one was injured but the range facilities were damaged in the mishap during the international exercise Southern Frontier.

A US fighter jet crashed on a cattle station near Katherine in September last year.

Katherine Mayor Anne Shepherd says the latest incident is a concern.

"I'm sure it's more than a perception that, and probably a bit of bias on my part, but I know that our defence forces are better trained than the Americans and we can't really afford to have these sorts of accidents," she said.

"Because it could happen over Katherine or Darwin or some other populated area and I think it's not very good for us."

All bombing activity at the range has been halted.

Ms Shepherd says it is not the first accident at the weapons range.

"Of course the Americans have lost two F/A-18s here in past years," she said.

"I think the last one crashed ... quite close to Katherine, so I'm certainly quite concerned about it.

"I know ... our Defence Force is always nervous when the Americans come."

The RAAF Directorate of Flying Safety is investigating the incident in conjunction with the US Marine Corps.

Exercise Southern Frontier involves about 500 US personnel from bases in Japan.

Greens party

The Territory branch of the Greens party has accused the US military of not facing up to the training incident.

Neither the Australian nor the US military has spoken publicly on the incident.

Ilana Eldridge from the Greens party says there is a lot of secrecy surrounding US training.

"It really looks to us as if the US is trying to position themselves to be able to act unilaterally, you know, act of their own, bat in military adventures in the region and doing it from the Northern Territory puts us all at grave risk," he said.

My question is, how the fuck do you accidently bomb something?

1. Unless the plane is going into combat the bombs are not armed, theres a saftey pin system in them much like in grenades. This pin would have had to been "accidently" removed.

2. In the cockpit theres a "Master Arm" switch that has to be turned on before the fire control is activated. This would have had to been "accidently" turned on.

3. Theres an actual "Bomb Release" fire button that needs to be pressed to release the bomb. This would have had to been "accidently" pressed.

We've talked about this at uni recently, Australia needs to have more say over the actions of the US within our territory. I can understand why both states may feel it is in their strategic interests to have the military presence of the US within the Asia Pacific, but I think we need to have more say over what and how this military presence conducts itself. Like the article says, we cant afford these kinds of accidents... especially since they are to in the interests of security, not to be a danger.

Well when they train they really do go throug hall the firing but it is not with real shit, it is kind of weird. Funny though, talking aobut better trained, that is the first place they go to fly, out of country. My friend Paul was just their writing about how no one has really flown before and shit, its kind of funny. 150 Km is quite the distance, even though a plane can cover that quickly, i dont think you guys down under need to worry about that much, im sure there will be more strict guidlines and shit, and hopefully better training before you go in the air.

The fucked up thing is that has gotten very little to no media attention at all. Could you imagine the fuss if Australia accidently bombed some remote region of the US? But Howard wont do shit. And like the article says, this isnt the first fuck up thats been reported, and Ive heard there have been others that havent even been reported.

I haven't heard about this incident. You got to question the IQ level of the American troops when it comes to this.

True that it has got no media attention in the US. I only heard and read up on it cus of this thread. Whoever you were saying needs to stand up and say something does. Cus if i look at it like it was done in the US i would want to know what the fuck is going on. Shit if this happened in the US all planes would be grounded until they figured out what was going on. And you think Americans are going off on Iraqis and shit, Australians would be to Americans how Americans are to this board.
Why don't you think Australians are outraged and saying something about this? Is it not as big as it seems, but not likely because accidents have happened before and you think they'd be angry by now, or is it ok because it is the US.

Well, besides that there's even more the pilot has to do. Settings for different bombing modes for example. But the training was probably with live ammunition, hence why the training took part in such a remote area.

I'll assume for now that the bomb dropped actually exploded. The article isnt clear on it, it just says facilities were damaged.

I really doubt this has jack all to do with the IQ level of American troops...first off we're talking about a pilot here. Now you can't even become a fighter pilot if you're dumb, all those blokes are smart enough.

One could expect this turning into an anti-American sentimented thread.

i've seen this story in yahoo news, on t.v., and heard about it on the radio. it's not that big of a news story compared to all the other things in the news over the past few days.

accidents happen in training exercises. for all we know there could have been something wrong with the plane.

It is possible to drop the bomb and not have it explode, which I'm assuming happened in Australia. In this case, I think the article is referring to the plane dropping a bomb that didn't explode.

In at least one instance, an American plane dropped a (non armed) nuclear bomb on accident on American soil.

Katherine isnt all that remote... it has like 11,000 people and it is relatively close to the state capital, Darwin.

Perhaps the bomb just wasnt securely fastened.

Bit of both I think. Accidents do happen and I dont think John Howard is capable of criticising the US - his face is too firmly planted on George Bush's arse to be able to open his mouth to speak, lol!
