The Muslim Dress Code

I'm not looking for a big debate on this, I just had one question. Feel free to close this thread after its been answered, unless it sparks an intelligent discussion.

Why is it that women in Islam have to cover themselves, specifically their faces, but men do not?

Covering your face is not Islam. That is TRADITION!

In Quran it says a woman must be covered. By that it doesn't mean you have to cover your face or hair cuz you can't give OWN definitions to words which in this context is: covered up. Nowhere in Quran does it say "you have to cover your face/hair"

True- again, man has distorted religion. One of the reasons is that women are seen as temptation, which is why the extremist cover up (so as not to tempt the men, i.e. married women tempting another man). But then, that's like saying temptation is our (females) fault and not the man's???? woah- something's very wrong there!

Men should have to cover their eyes. End of problem. Oh yeah...men are the ones who established the tradition for women, what a surprise.

Yea I know what's your saying and I really dislike the way women are beein seen as.

I went to these kind of meetings, we have lots of mosques and small "schools" where we debate. And one day we were talking about marriage when a "leader" said this; "You can't date the woman if she doesn't have a brother or father with him" The reason was that a man would automaticaly get turned on the girl (like men are some crazy horny sex machines  .) and the "devil" would be close to them cause of her "seduction".

I stopped going to their meetings cuz I thought they were bad-mouthing the religion and I KNOW that's not how Islam was ment to be. I also feel sorry for the women.

"The temptation thing doesn't make sense to me. Surely, then, attractive men should have to cover up and unattractive women shouldn't?"

Well, women are not as lustful as men. They're not looking so much for sex as they are for husbands who will give them children.

Well no, it's about the philosofy that a man enjoys sex while a woman doesn't. The kind of image "sex" has in western countries isn't the same in "our" countries. Sex is something not to talk about, and ESPECIALLY women cuz sex for women can't be "accepted" as a pleasure. This "explains" the one side that man has much more to gain from sex (in their view of course) then a women, which is why men don't cover up (cuz women "don't like" sex). And the real fact that most of the leaders have taken advantage to lesser the voices in any manner cause even independent women can be trouble for leaders!

Like RFTP said women do not have to cover there faces, the head and the body has to be covered, covering the face is only tradition or by the women herself who has chosen to do so. The first commandment or ruling concerning this was given to believing men to lower there gaze first. But by covering up the women shows she is not just a piece of meat or flesh to be admired but is equal to the man. It is protection for her from the gaze of men as just bieng sex objects.

But who's to judge whether one person is attractive or not. One man may seem unattractive to someone, but the most beautiful person to another!

By the way, what do you guys think of men having more than one wife, but a female can have only one husband?

i dunno i couldnt deal with more then one woman thats 4 times a month of bitching an moaning about how much of an asshole you are! Or imagine all 4 of em pregnant at the same time i gotta stop before i have nightmares. I feel like whatever to each his own if you can handle more then one wife an you abide by what the Quaran tells us then thats fine but as for myself personally, no way 1 is enough.

on what basis?
On the basis that im a male....
ona serious note...............Where does it say that anyway?
If it says it in the quaran, then i know that one of the only reason that men can marry more than once is in times of war etc. This would be the case if a woman is widowed, and therefore needs someone to care for her. Due to the sahortage of men, some people would have to marry more than once.

What about nuns in christianity, isn't that the same situation........or are christians unanswerable to this type of behaviour

Not sure if it's in the Qu'ran- still learning. In the Old Testament, it states you can marry again if your first wife cannot have children. And yea- the widow. It states that you have to be fair to all your wives, and treat them the same. Also, this is probs down to tradition (like most things), but a lot of Arab countries can have up to 7 wives.-not sure on the basis of what tho. I dont personally agree with it. -ur marriage vows are to one person only- 'in sickness and in health, til death do us part'.
