The accountability of the media

We all know the media is corrupt, I see it mentioned all the time, it exaggerates things, flat out makes them up, or pedals propaganda. Fox News is about as unbiased as Hitler on the Israel debate.

So what should be done about it? What could be done about it? Do we just sit back and accept the fact that the news isn't as truthful as it once was and hope everyone else catches on, or do we as a society to something about it?

I would like to see us take an example from the scientific community and set up an international body that investigates media claims to ensure they are factual and unbiased, and holds those accountable that breach a certain ethical agreement.

Sure this would never eliminate all the lies, but I would much easier believe a media source that belongs to such an institution than one that doesn't, and at least it would offer people an indication of who can be believed and who cant. Ideally media sources would be kicked out of the alliance if they were found in breach of its ethics.

What do you think? Is it possible? Is it even needed?

It's a good plan and i agree to that extent that ideally something must be done about it. Possible? Yes, sure. Needed? Good question. Half of the people can see through "Foxian" bullshit news, the other half just takes it for granted. Which means the problem doesn't lay fully with corrupt media outlets. There are always millions of stupid people ready to believe them, controlling agency or not.

So, yeah, a controlling insitution would be a good idea. Not to "check up" on biased media, because i could care less how hard Fox rides the governments penis, but to protect the stupid people from themself. After all, stupid people have voting rights. Education. :thumb:

money controls everything nowadays. that controlled institution that ur talking about will sooner or later fall under this money empire and suck the government's dick or whatever.

yesterday in class we talked alittle about biased media. someone in class said something about fox news. i had to laugh. they are biased. but at least they admit they are biased in a conservative way. all the other news medias wont even admit they are biased toward the left if they had a gun to their head.

i think there are people out there trying to prove the bias in media outlets.
newsbusters.org
http://www.michellemalkin.com/

those two sites, show the liberal biased in the media.

i dont like the idea of just being able to believe everything i'm told on by a news outlet. i would rather do my own research on a subject that is brought up on the news and form my own opinion rather than believe the opinion on the news source.

what i thnk needs to be done away with in the media is all this "here is my opinion, here is another side , and another side, then maybe one more" we hardly get the facts anymore with most media sources. just alot of opinions. i just want facts.

She's an attention seeker, nothing more. Her mouth is a lot bigger than her brain.

^ Article that shows exactly my sentiment for Ms. Malkin.

Other than that, i agree with your post saying you want facts first and foremost from a media outlet. Not 1000 different opinions. Not saying there is no room for opinion in it, but it should come second.

yeah malkin can have some extreme views on things and sometimes i start to think that her views are extreme right, which you dont see that often anymore. but i still think she does a good job on showing stories that get burried in the media.
