WASHINGTON - A divided Supreme Court ruled Thursday that local governments may seize people's homes and businesses against their will for private development in a decision anxiously awaited in communities where economic growth often is at war with individual property rights. The 5-4 ruling — assailed by dissenting Justice Sanday Day O'Connor as handing "disproportionate influence and power" to the well-heeled in America — was a defeat for some Connecticut residents whose homes are slated for destruction to make room for an office complex.

something like this happend to my 6th grade teacher. the home he grew up in were his parents had lived for nearly 50 years was right next to Scott Air Force Base, (where my parents were stationed at the time, and were they retired). the base wanted to make a new and bigger runway and my teachers parents house was right in the path of the runway.

the govt paid them. but they got booted out before their new house was even half done.

At first I thought we were talking American foreign policy.

this has been going on before but, before the govt could take your home away to built highways, add on to military bases , etc. but now a big deal because now they can take your home to built a shopping mall or even other residential housing.

in CT there are families being offered 60grand to move out of their houses on the water front, that could be worth 300grand. so these people arent getting fair compensation.

in the case in CT it seems like they just dont want the people to live in this certain area so they can built these giant half million dollar million dollar homes and make another hamptons. they dont feel like these people are good enough to live in this new residential developement they would want to build.
