Super Mario retires

he was great, although i'd say Gretzky was better.

it's a shame this won't get much publicity and many people don't know about him just because its hockey. in canada its probably big news.

Sad day. And Saint, please explain to me how he is a bum.

That's very interesting coming from a fellow Canadian who does enjoy hockey.......

He is probably the most gifted hockey player ever, Gretzky is still better but Mario is right behind him. Congrats too him, had a great career.

Congratz to a great player whos had an amazing career. I think Lemieux was as good as Gretzky and he should be inducted in the Hockey Hall Of Fame very soon

He's a bum because he came out of retirement cause of his desire and dedication to the sport? Would you say the same about Michael Jordan, who did the exact same thing? And while a guy like Jordan came back with the Wizards, was no where near the level he was at when he retired the first few times, Mario excelled

Mario had the disease problems, overcame it. Had the chronic back problems, overcame that. The guy was as tough as nails and loved the game of hockey. Jordan came back for the love of the game too, yeah, but he knew damn well he wouldn't be able to compete. Mario comes back in 2001, and still showed the dominance that he showed.

Since coming out of retirement in 01, he had some very impressive stats for a guy who hadn't played 5-6 seasons:

Games - 170
Goals - 77
Assists - 152
Points - 229

In 170 games, he had 229 points, with a team who's had little to no talent the past 2 seasons. Not bad if you ask me.

Don't forget what he's done for the sport of hockey in Canada. Canada Cup in 87, Olympic Gold in 2002, World Cup of Hockey in 2004. He's already in the Hall of Fame btw Pietro.

I could go on, but I hope that you get the point.
