Technology Slow Ass Comp

#1
sup
here is my situation
early last week my comp suddenly became SLOW AS HELL. you cant understand how slow this p.o.s. is. i ran spybot because i hadnt run it in awhile and i thought i just had too many spywares. so i run it and delete everything yet it is still slow. so, i run norton anit-virus and it finds a bunch of shit. i try to delete it, it deletes like 2 of them and the rest, like 10-15 of them (maybe more) says "delete failed". so im stuck with it and i cant get rid of it.
what are my options? is there any way i can fix it or do i have to reformat?

thx

Boot in safe mode, then run Norton again. Should be able to get rid of stuff you couldn't before.

You can press F8 when the computer's booting, but it's easier to do the following:

Start > Run...
Type
Code:
msconfig
Windows 98/ME:
Click the advanced button on the General tab
Check 'Enable startup menu'
Click OK
Click Yes when it prompts you to restart

Windows XP:
Click on the BOOT.INI tab
Check '/SAFEBOOT'
Click OK
Click Restart

alrite thx man i did that. norton found 9 adware viruses though it still was unable to delete like 4 of them and the comp is still VERY slow. dont know what else is left to do other than reformating and im too lazy for that. probably save it for the weekend. before i do that are there any other options left?

Yeah, run an anti-trojan just in case. There are two links in the Knowledge Base.

Also, download/run HijackThis! and post your log in here so I can see if there's anything that could be slowing you down.

alrite i ran the program "a-squared" trojan remover i found in the knowledge base. it found 0 infected files and i also ran spybot the other day when i was in safe mode and that didnt find anything either yet comp is still slow. also downloading is slow. while downloading a-squared i was getting like 3-5kb/s so maybe this problem is related. i also ran hijack this! and here is the logfile:

sorry i would have just attached it but the thing was being a bitch so i had to send it thru yousendit

The log is just a text file, you could have opened it in notepad and pasted the results into here.

Check and remove the following entries:

Notes:

Put HijackThis into a permanent folder, i.e. C:\
If you installed SpySpotter yourself, uninstall it. It's not a reliable Anti-Spyware program. If you need anti-spyware programs, check the Knowledge Base.

Once you've finished, boot in Safe Mode and delete the following files/folders, if you can find them.

C:\Updater.exe
C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer
C:\EliteToolBar
C:\WINDOWS\ELITES~1 (any folder here starting with "ELITE")
C:\Program Files\SpySpotter

Run anti-spyware programs and any virus programs you have (or run the TrendMicro scan again).

I'd strongly suggest you switch from Internet Explorer to an alternative browser such as Firefox or Opera. Chances are, the problems you have could have been avoided by using one of these browsers.

I recommend you download a free copy of webroot window washer. Somtimes Temp files can slow your computer way down. This is true especially for IE users.

alrite i did everything you said and my comp is now much better. but i think i had another problem all along. there was a problem with my wireless router that i hate very much. i disconncted the router and now have a direct connection with my modem to my computer, no more router. but, when i look at my 'Local Area Connection Status', under activity, the image of the 2 computers keep going on and off. that cant be good. is there anything i can do or should i contact my ISP

You mean, one of the screens on the icon seems to switch off, then back on?

I don't know what, if anything, that signals but it's normal.
ya keeps switchin on and off. but my net is workin fine now its back up to speed. looks like it was the router all along but i still cleaned out my comp pretty well.
thx for all the help man and happy birthday :thumb:

The two little computers on/off? Yeah your talking about the activity monitor. You say your connected directly to the internet on a high speed connection. Its the activity monitor. It could mean you should check and make sure that you have somthing in-between your computer and the internet.

Just a suggestion

i had a router in between but not anymore.
this is what im looking at:

when its blacked out the packet numbers dont move. and the lights keep going on and off even though i dont lose my connection to the internet.
and everytime i turn on my computer i get his message from my ISP (Rogers) that im not connected to the internet. this is it:

yeah thats most likely your Isp Pinging your machine. Dont worry about thats but script kiddies will ping your pachine looking for vulnribilities and open ports make shure you have a firewall. Its normal network behavior to take a minute when booting before automatically configuring itself. Ignor the rogers message if your having no problems.
