Iran will not back down from these petty UN sanctions. What can the United States do about this? The US can hope that the sanctions will cause internal turmoil, leading to a revolution of some sort, resulting in Iran stopping the advancement of its nuclear weapons. But, I don't think so. Bush can also, at the end of his term in 2008, order an air strike on Iran...but I don't think America's intelligence knows where to aim, and they will be reluctant and less confident after the WMD failure. So, what is in store for the next couple of years? Some scholars predict that Iran is going to develop an atomic bomb within a year.
On a side note, I was at a Robert Jervis lecture today and he called Bush a lame duck. It was rather amusing.
