This baby deserves it's own thread.

This is taking technology to a whole new level. I know some of this was shown at CES, but it's so good!

According to Nielsen’s May survey, a large percentage of mobile consumers in the U.S. own smartphones and that smartphones account for majority of new cell phone purchases.
Smartphone is a device which has defined the portability of a mini computer which can be carried anywhere with ease. With smartphones becoming a craze around the world, Android phones along withiPhones have found their way into many households.
The competition between major handset makers like Apple, Samsung, HTC and Motorola has brought out various designs, faster processors, bigger displays, integration of newer software’s, faster data speeds in the form of 4G and better battery life to boast the performance of the smartphone.

It looked like we have seen it all, but Samsung is making way for an innovative future design that may bring a new definition for smartphone with future mobile concept project in the form of “Samsung Galaxy Skin”, a flexible smartphone that can take various forms.

Samsung Galaxy Skin smartphone will utilize flexible design. In fact, few weeks ago Samsung had confirmed the production of the flexible AMOLED displays which will debut in the second quarter of 2012. Also Samsung showed off its flexible AMOLED displays in CES 2011 at Las Vegas. The displays are rollable, bendable and can even survive impacts from a hammer.

Here is video on flexible AMOLED display:

The new mobile phone concept takes a leap forward from the “Smart Phone” era to declare the “Genius Phone” era, a world beyond being smart.
The AMOLED flexible display uses a plastic polyimide substrate instead of one made of glass. Tests shown that using plastic polyimide instead of glass will allow the flexible displays to bend around a cylinder with a 1-inch diameter. The electrical signals send to the flexible display cause physical deformation which is the electrically active polymer core technology. A big win for this type of displays is that they use the AMOLED technology, meaning that they come with low energy consumption and good screen brightness. Moreover, Samsung has teamed up with a Japanese company called Ube Kosan, who most probably will be playing important role in production of the AMOLED flexible displays.
The new core technology in Samsung Galaxy Skin utilizing mouse-featured applications will allow the phone to act as a mouse apart from fulfilling the function of being a smartphone. Also the “Galaxy Skin” smartphone because of its flexibility can be turned into a watch clock on a table or can be worn in the hand and can act as a smart projector when placed on table. The future phone also may be integrated with 3D effects as well.
The Galaxy Skin series phones may bring in the sensor sensitivity similar to that of ITC (Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation) for remote sensing which depending on change in weather and temperature, including change in color enables charging of solar battery, concept similar to photosynthesis.
It seems that Samsung Electronics team designed the Galaxy Skin as iPhone and iPad was sailing a new height.
The Samsung Galaxy Skin specifications shows it having:
  1. Display: 4-inch WVGA SUPER AMOLED (800X480) Flexible type display
  2. Network: 3.5G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE): 850/900/1800/1900 MHz), 4G (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps): 900/1900/2100 MHz

Meanwhile,Taiwanese companies involved in the manufacture of Apple devices have started preparations for the production of the fabled Apple devices and as per current plans the gadget will hit stores in the US in October, DigitTimes reported.
The production will start in marginal volumes by next month, but larger volume output can be expected by October. Contrary to earlier reports, Apple will be releasing only on iPhone this Fall, the report adds.
Keith Bachman of BMO Capital Markets said the iPhone 5 will be delayed as much as mid-2012, whereas Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore kicked up a storm by predicting that Apple will launch a cheaper iPhone 4S in September.
Currently Samsung Galaxy line smartphone has become an imminent threat for Apple iPhones, as the official figures from Samsung in 2011 show that the Samsung Galaxy S2 has done exceptionally well. The Samsung Galaxy S2 has not yet reached US shores, but has already broken Samsung’s own record as it sold over three million units in 55 days since its launch making it the second fastest selling phone ever.
Apple and Samsung lawsuit apart, now the new threat can been seen through the eyes of upcoming Samsung Galaxy Skin smartphone which may displace the iPhone and its successors.

Yeah only the "screen" part will be flexible. It still needs a place for its battery and electronics.
While this is very cool I played with a flexible Amoled screen and I have to say that they're not very practical. But this also means very slim smartphones, which I'm looking forward to. It's already possible to release a 4-5mm thick phone (with no camera though). Add slimmer cmos units and we'll have 5mm thin smartphones with cameras next year.

On a side note I've also seen a 2-3mm thick edge led-lit LCD panel from Samsung-Sony today too. While LCD will basically be a dying technology as soon as issues with big OLEDs are solved there are still cool things to be done with it, while the technology is at its very peak at the moment.

this is taking technology to a whole new level, but i dont see how i would use a device by bending it. maybe the only time i would, would be to also use it as a stand for viewing... but im perfectly happy holding a device in my hand to view whatever i want.

lol

that's pretty fabulous, but i'm with you guys on the bendable part being more of a gimmick and less of a useful utility.... or maybe it's somehow revolutionizing in unexpected and random ways, and we simply haven't realized yet. so yeah.....
