Row over terror inquiry

Politicians and victims have criticised the Government's decision not to hold a public inquiry into the July 7 terrorist atrocities.

The Home Office has confirmed there will be no public inquiry into the attacks on London's transport network.

Home Secretary Charles Clarke is instead looking at what evidence could be made available to parliamentary probes into the suicide bombings.

Saba Mozakka, whose mother Behnaz lost her life when a bomb ripped through a Piccadilly Line Tube train near King's Cross station, said it was unacceptable not to hold a public inquiry.

"This is not acceptable to us and the families will be campaigning for there to be a full public inquiry," she said.

The 24-year-old added: "I heard cost is being cited as being one of the reasons for not holding a public inquiry, and that's ridiculous."

Sir Iqbal Sacranie of the Muslim Council of Britain also repeated his demands for a full inquiry.

"It has to be a fully comprehensive public inquiry that will provide us the information we need as to what actually happened, how it happened and why it happened so that we will be better prepared to prevent such tragedy happening again," he said.

Any report published by the Home Office would be the first official overview of the atrocities, which killed 52 innocent people on Tubes at Aldgate, Edgware Road and Russell Square, and on a bus at Tavistock Square.

Almost uniquely in the history of British crime and terrorism, details of the perpetrators' actions are unlikely to emerge through the normal means - a criminal trial - because the four bombers are dead.

Whitehall sources said that although the July 7 bombings were still under investigation, the security service had already built up a "very good picture" of the circumstances around bombers Shehzad Tanweer, Hasib Hussain, Mohammad Siddique Khan and Jermaine Lindsay.

What do you think should a public inqury be held?
