Religious dress in schools

#1
This has been in the news a lot recently all over the world. What are you views? (Do American schools have uniforms?)

Should people be allowed to wear non-uniform clothing if their religion dictates it? What about fringe religions, religions which have extreme dress codes?

Why should religion be the exception? If I'm a naturist or a Goth or a cross-dresser or a member of the KKK, why should I not be allowed to wear what I want?

Shouldn't schools be allowed to have uniform policy? Uniforms are used to make everyone equal, to minimise the differences between people.

all over the world?, i dont really think the world is talking bout american kids unforms, i think u mean that muslim girl that complained about her school not allowing her to wear her religious clothing.

this might sound harsh but i think she needs to stop being such a fucking baby, i mean a school has rules, when u sign the papers u have to abid by them, no one is making u got there, if there rules say u have to wear this, then wear it otherwise dont go to the school, i mean she wanted to wear her religious clothes but why should she get to wear it while the other kids wear there uniforms, i hate school uniforms, there very constricting, but if im going to the school what the fuck can i say, i go to the school and they teach me, school is like 6 hours, its not like it kills u to wear uniform for that long, if i was the head teacher, id tell her to fuck off, so just becuz her religion says it i have to abid by it,if she cant follow rules then she can fuck off.

I made this thread with that recent case in mind, but it's been brought up before. I asked about Americans and school uniforms because I wasn't sure whether they had uniforms. If they don't, it's not as much of an issue. I'm sure they have rules regarding what you can and cannot wear, though.

So if I wanted to wear a KKK outfit, that would be fine?

lol. i believe religious dress should be accepted but nothing too extreme. e.g. them hats muslims wear (sorry if that sounds rude i dont know what theyre called) or jews aren't hurting nobody, but a whole dress code of the body is unacceptable. I also think each case needs to be evaluated seperately - how religious are the people? I bet half those that make a fuss dont even go to their local place of worship. The recent case demonstrates that they ost probably took legal action for the money, since theyre now sueing for further "damages". If they were truely religious, they would have made their point after winning the right to wear their dress and carried on with their lives.

Fair enough, but do you think that there should actually be state/country laws passed regarding this?Like not having restricted to a few schools? The hat, well, I cant tell you that it's necessary, it's more of a homo fashion if you ask me (lol jk).But the veil, the whole body covered except for the wrist and face, etc is one of the things no nation should fuck with, it goes against certain people's beliefs.
To sum it up, if such laws were to be passed, they should well considered and reasonable.I fail to see how more clothes one wears is considered a crime.

Everyone should wear uniform in school.

As for religious tolerance, I don't believe religion should play a part in school life so it makes no difference.

For those who support the wearing of religious garments in school, check what Illuminattile said. Sure the KKK may not have a recognised religion of their own, btu they have their own set of beliefs & yet would be prohibited from expressing them under what you're saying. Is this fair? No.

Uniform also cuts down the instances of discrimination via classism. If everyone is wearing the same bland thing, it is harder to pic on someone for being poor & having cheap clothes - although this kind of classism can & will still happen, but hopefully to a lesser degree.

If you do not comply, I guess there could be a Muslim school, Catholic school, Protestant school, Jewish school etc. - although this would be far from ideal.

Why should there be one rule for one person and another rule for the next? If the person next to me goes to the Mosque more often, does that mean they can wear religious dress but I can't?

And what about non-religious dress, why is religion such an exception?

Nazism is a set of beliefs, would you let me come to school wearing a Swastika armband?

This has nothing to do with my other post, Illuminattile.
"Fur Jackets keep you warm, would you let me come to school wearing a fur jacket with a fur hat?" is more relevant.
It's like you can allow students to wear hats or bandanas, but not a longer sheet of cloth over their head cause of what it stands to them (i.e.those wearing it) in person.

But this attire - both your example & Illuminattile's - could be taken off when on school premises so this argument isn't really valid.

Why does it matter whether it's a religion or not?
If I wanted to hold Hitler up as God and call Nazism my religion, would it be OK for me to wear a Swastika then? It's a set of beliefs, is there a fundamental difference that means religion - any religion - is more important than a set of secular beliefs? If I believe in something as strongly as a Muslim believes in Islam, why am I not allowed the same rights?

how the fuck is that the same ? explain this for me.

if im muslim, and i want to wear a fucking veil to class orwhatever it is they wear, why not. your kkk and swastika are EVIL, both are racist symbols, and are proven by the mass murder of millions of people . thats not the same as a religious belief  this is the worst attempt at an intellectual comeback i have ever seen and i cant believe im even arguing this. this proves to me your not intelligent.

its not the same stop being stupid., when the swastika represents the slaughter of jews and the KKK is a racist organization, its not the same as a religion. i dont understand how the hell you can even compare the two
