NEW YORK (AP) -- Game 1 of the NBA finals drew the lowest rating ever for an opening-game in prime time, dropping 19 percent from last year.

The San Antonio Spurs' 85-76 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night earned a 6.3 rating and 11 share on ABC. The previous low was a 6.4/11 in 2003.

Last year's Game 1 between Miami and Dallas earned a 7.8 rating and 14 share.

The rating is the percentage watching a telecast among all homes with televisions, and the share is the percentage tuned in to a broadcast among those households with televisions on at the time. A ratings point represents 1,114,000 households.

hm. Well. Do you think it's cause people

1 are tired of the Spurs
2 give the Cavs zero chances to win against the spurs
3 the nba with all that new rules is just not that intersting no more, people don't want to see FTs all the time?

I say 1 and 2 combined. Like i said before small market teams hold very little interest in the public's eye.

It's most likely the Spurs. I remember the ratings in the Detroit/Spurs finals. The Spurs are just boring for most people.

No one likes the Spurs, or how they play.

But then "King" James is playing in these Finals. This was supposed to be the best thing that could of happened. David Stern was smiling ear to ear when being interviewed about Cleveland winning in the East. I bet as it goes on more people will watch. Argueably the biggest name in basketball and no one cares, somethings wrong.

I also blame it on the whole new UFC generation. Not in it for the skill and competiton, the mind games and what not, but more of the flash and highlight.

I think the reason no one cares is simply that no one gives the Cavs a chance in hell to win.

TOdays game will be lower. Cavs proved they have no chance, as far as the average fan is concerned. Also its the last Sopranos.

I haven't even bothered checking tonight's score yet. I got my basketball fill this weekend from the marathon on ESPN Classic.

Casual fans don't want to watch this shit because it's so unbalanced and the dominant team doesn't have enough, I dunno, sexiness? The East is just sad. The early rounds drag on way too long... it should be best-of-5 or 3 or fuck it, single-elimination until the conference finals. Oh, and the regular season's at least thirty games too long. And all this jumping around to different networks over the course of the past several weeks is annoying. They should have rigged the draft Patrick Ewing-style so a large-market team had one of the top two picks. And.... God, David Stern sucks.

I dont think anything is wrong with the season length playoff length referees etc. The only thing I see wrong is the quality of teams. The league just isnt balanced enough so there really isnt that much competitiveness.
