Technology Question About File Sizes..

Im gonna be gettin a new phone after a while and it has a mp3 player on it and it says I'll have roughly 46mb of RAM to load MP3s and Videos onto. About how many mp3's would i be able to put on there? and how many videos would i be able to put on there?

and also...

is there something i can read that breaks down the file sizes to me? Like i wouldnt know how many mp3's i could save on a 2gb thing..cuz i dont know much about gigabites, kb's, mbs or anything i need to learn about all that :confused:

kilboyte (kb) = 1,000 bytes
megabyte (mb) = 1,000,000 bytes = 1,000 kb
gigabyte (gb) = 1,000,000,000 bytes = 1,000,000 kb = 1,000 mb

The rule of thumb for mp3's is about a megabyte a minute.

I have a 40gb mp3 player, with just under 20gb used. It has 5,527 songs on it at the moment. A meg a minute with a median of about 3 1/2 minutes is about right.

46mb = 46 minutes = 13 songs
2gb = 2,000 minutes = 570 songs

Obviously you can compress mp3s to save space at the cost of sound quality (chances are you won't notice too much difference).

An mp3 file is usually 4 MB give or take depending on how long the song is and how it was encoded. The less encoding (Example: Most mp3's are encoded on 192kbps/48 if you encode it with 128kbps/44 you would save some MB). So if its 4mbs it will go down to about 3.7 MB.

46MB I'd say about 10 mp3 files. Videos is another different topic as well. It depends on how it is encoded.

thanks for that breakdown, so does it work the same for video? would it still be a megabyte a minute for every minute of a video? and how many video clips would i be able to put on a 46mb?

how do u encode mp3s? 192 is suppose to be perfect quality right?

192kbps - 320kbps is CD quality. No point in encoding any higher, you're very unlikely to hear the difference. Unless you're a classically trained musician or a sound engineer and you're anally retentive about sound quality, you can record at 128kbps or even 96kbps without really noticing much difference.

To re-encode mp3s at a lower bit rate, I suggest CDEX
