Technology PS3 Patent.

#1
Sony has issued a new patent for the PS3 which would block the console from playing used, rented or borrowed videogames. Great. All the more reason to go out and fork over $600 of your hard earned American dollars.

They've had the patent since 2000, but now since the PS3 is going to be released in the coming months, it has been brought to the limelight. An article in the LA Times is pretty much responsible, and the reporter has tried to talk to Sony and she couldn't get a word out of them.

But, is this all together a bad move? Will something like this, although a little smarmy, totally dissuade people from investing in the awesome that is the PS3? Or will it prove to be a smart business move on Sony's part?

I don't think it would stop the diehard gamers from getting one and it will still sell well. I can just see so many scenarios when this thing won't work, like if your ps3 fucks up and you get it exchanged, then would that render all your current games useless? I doubt that will be the case tho.
So is this a definate feature that Sony have confirmed? If not I suspect Sony will scrap this idea before release

Personally i think it will take a back seat to XBOX 360, just as XBOX did with PS2 because of its late release. However I think in its later years the PS3 will make a comeback because the features they took time to include will take time to build upon...

more bullshit from the wii60 fanboys
It's not entirely bullshit, they actually do have that patent.

But I'd like to share with you guys a few great quotes, from the people at Sony about their PlayStation 3.

"When I look at [the two versions of the Xbox 360 for sale], I think it just confuses the audience. So I think we wouldn't take that strategy." - Sony Europe VP, Phil Harrison.

"The first 5 million [consumers] are going to buy [the PS3]...even if it didn't have games." - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO, David Reeves.

"It's probably too cheap. For instance, is it not nonsense to compaire the charge for dinner at the company cafateria with dinner at a fine restaurant? With the PS3, you can have next-generation game expierences that could previously not be expierenced - things like next-generation graphics and various services via the network. And, as with the PS1 and PS2, we believe people who like games will, without question, purchase it. If you can have an amazing expierence, we believe price is not a problem. - President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Ken Kutaragi.

"We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the web, and use other [home] computer fuctions... "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC." - Sony Europe VP, Phil Harrison.

Gotta love those guys at Sony. :thumb:

Also, didn't dig up patents, it was in a thing called a newspaper.

Google it buddy, most of the quotes are from gaming sites, and like I said about 2 months old.

And the patent was an article from a few days ago in the LA Times.

Like I said, 5 minutes.

I'm not a reporter, I don't dig for info.

blah blah blah , what the fuck would i want to google shit for , re-read my post , then post a legitimate source. That means post a link to something that is reliable. If it was from L.A Times then there should be physical evidence , take a picture of the article , or otherwise get a link to the article.

^^Well, since the internet is a tool, it's there at your disposal for finding lots and lots of information, not just porn. How about I give you a link 2 links with the information? Usually when you go to a newspaper's site like WashingtonPost.com you have to join up, you might not want to do that.

http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=27568

http://www.joystiq.com/2005/11/08/playstation-3-wont-play-used-games/

Also, here are the links to the quotes from the guys at Sony.

The third quote is in the June issue of EGM. I wasn't going to dig to find it.

There you go, I'm not bullshitting.

I like this point raised by the supplied article:

"Renting games is one of the main advantages of owning a game console. Sony almost certainly knows this, and realizes that even the presence of a rumor implying that the PS3 couldn't play rented games could have a major impact on sales. This explains the official denials, but why would the rumor persist in the first place?"

Fuck the PS3 for being so expensive. I'll wait a year or two till the price drops.
