Technology Problem with ram

OK so I got my hands on 256 additional MB's of Ram to add to the 128 that came with my laptop (HP omnibook XE3). The problem I have is, there are 2 slots for memory, however, when i insert the 256 mb ram it will get detected the first time i turn on my computer but after i reboot it once again says that i only have 128 mb. I tried switching the ram cards around for a bit and i noticed that the card i insert in the primary slot will always get detected however if i only put ram in the secondary slot it will be detected. Is there no way to get them to work simulatenously?

They should work simultenaeously. Both RAM cards are compatible with each other and the rest of the computer?

Yeah I think so I'm no computer whiz but I was told that they would work with this model and as I said they did work simulatneously until I restart my computer, I repeated and the same thing happened. Strange.

Are they both the same MHz speed?
Yeah I'm prettyu sure they're both at 133 MHz.
Update on the problem, I switched the sticks around so the 256 MB is in the primary slot and now they both get detected about every other time, when both doesn't get detected I only have 256 MB of memory.
