Peter Kay is going to sing the England World Cup anthem, according to a newspaper report.

Apparently the top bombing funnyman has beaten rival offers from rockers Kaiser Chiefs and Kasabian. (Pic: Universal)

FA bosses are said to have been so impressed with Pete's hit, Is This The way To Amerillo that they want to sign him up.

A friend of the comedian told the paper: "Peter loves his football and is delighted England have qualified for Germany. He hopes he'll be able to go.

"He fancies doing an original song. But even if he picks a classic it will be brilliantly done and will quickly become a terrace smash

Currently doing the rounds of the record
labels in London is a demo for England's
World Cup song for Germany 2006. There's
apparently a lot of interest.

The song? It's called "Who do you think
you are kidding, Mr Klinsmann?" A new,
jingoistic version of the Dad's Army
theme tune. Ant & Dec are being approached
to sing it, with Gazza, Amir Khan and
Peter Kaye the main targets for the
video. Makes you proud to be English...
