No Talk of Sudan-Darfur Conflict?

#1
I understand all this conflict regarding the London attacks are on most peoples' minds, blame is being tossed to everyone from Muslims to Americans, etc., the conflict in Iraq is being tied into this (as it inevitably would, doesn't matter by which side of the fence), but I want to know (granted, I don't visit this section of the boards much) why isn't the Sudan situation discussed more often, I'm specifically talking about the Darfur situation.

I didn't catch Live8, too few actual "musicians" on the bill, Bob Geldof isn't exactly a messiah to me (his wife is HILARIOUS), but I understand they raised money to go to Africa, did they mention ANYTHING about what's going on in Darfur as we speak? Did the G8 summit mention anything???

A deal was signed January 9th of this year to signify the end of the Sudanese government and the Sudan Liberation Army's battling, but nothing was even mentioned about the Janjaweed (hired Muslims basically paid to "clear" civilians by ANY MEANS NECESSARY), and their tactics. These hired mercs are being government-backed, does that make these rapes and murders justified?

I want to know what the Muslim community has to say about this, are they speaking on this issue at all? I'm not being antagonistic, I just want to know if they're focused solely on what's being done TO them, instead of what many of them are doing in Darfur right now.

I got to thinking more about this after hearing a quote to the effect of:

"The dark cloud of slavery hangs over our faith today, and it is a lesson I have been neglectful in my teachings to you. Our Islamic brothers to the north, enslaving our African men and women, all in the name of Allah. This is not widely spoke of, since it does not fit into the neat little package of Christian Whites, enslaving Blacks."

(If anybody can tell me what that quote is from (tv/movie buffs), good job. You get a cookie.)

What are people's views on what's going on, I want to hear Muslim views on this, they're so adamant against their lands being occupied, what are their justifications for their occupation of Sudan?

Is it fair to villify all Muslims for what's going on there? Is it fair to villify the Catholic religion for molestation charges, Mormons for polygamy, Scientology for murder (Lisa McPherson, Google that name), America for 9/11, Iraq for 9/11, Muslims for London, you see where I'm going with this?

I just want opinions, I'm not taking on a whole religion for this, I'm slowly growing out of the media spin that "all Muslims are terrorists", but the spin works MANY, MANY ways, in many different directions, I just want to know why Darfur isn't in the news anymore.

It's an excellent question why Sudan isn't in the news anymore. It was for a while, but nothing happened against it, other news issues popped up and people just "forgot" i think.

It should get much more media coverage. What's happening there is terrible. Genocide in it's purest form.

You raise good questions btw. :thumb:

What happened in Darfur was defnintely terrible, but not a genocide. We've suffered from the longest civil war in Africa. The janjaweed were armed by the government to help with their fight. The janjaweed then used their arms to force their wishes on the poor people of darfur. But to say that the northern part of sudan is trying to enslave the western parts "Africans" is just a load of bs. neither the western nor northern people are pure africans or pure arabs. The sudanese goverment is hated by everyone no matter what part of sudan they're from, everyones getting fucked except those affiliated with the goverment. I see on TV the Justice and Equality Movement talk off their asses of how the west is being targeted and marginilized from the rest of the country, they know very well that everyone is getting fucked and not only the west. About a month ago I was watching Tyson's last fight (what a shameful way to end your career), and was listening to his post-fight conference, and the man just said the same ignorant shit "arabs trying to enslave africans". I wish he'd go to sudan as he said he would to see the truth with his own eyes.
I just want to make it clear that what happened in sudan had nothing in common with what happened in rwanada.
The real problem that Darfur suffered from was the Janjaweed, and fortunately, it's much less of a problem now ever since the sudanese government faced enormous pressure from the UN.

What's the death toll in Darfur as of now? Sites I go to, the number killed by the Janjaweed vary from 40,000-400,000, if it's not genocide, what do you call it? Ethnic cleansing? If that's so, is it more akin to the Yugoslav conflicts years ago than what happened in Rwanda?

I'm not as well-versed as most, but I report what I read, I'm trying to soak up information, learn more about this. It should definitely get more press than it's getting. I do want to get Muslim and/or Arab opinions (there are some of both on this board), because there have also been reports of Janjaweed desecration of Muslim holy sites, as well as the Quran itself.

The Janjaweed (sp?) are purely mercenaries. Thugs. Scum. Bandits. They shouldn't be looked upon as proper Muslims.

yeah the death toll is pretty high. what i meant by the comparison is that its not an ethnic war as it was in rwanda, also the conflict got huge international attention before it went out of hands.

^yeah true, we're all black in sudan except for a very small number of Orthodox Christians who came from egypt. But you know they have to categorize and ethnicize the conflict just to add fuel to the fire. almost all of my family members speak arabic fluently although we come from Alfashir city which is in Darfur.
