"nigger"

How can you education someone about the word Nigger that has no clue?
Recently it came to my attention, that my pastor's daughter (who's white and married to a preacher) got into an altercation with a black man last weekend. She called him a 'nigger', which surprized her husband and company..they felt shocked, but dismissed it as 'just a word'..
I'm pretty hurt and disappointed, but how can you education someone that will most likely isolate the incident by saying 'well i have black friends' or 'it was because he made me mad, because im not a racist'? there is more power and hate within those letters that no one should use it...how can one relay that lesson to someone that never experienced any experience of discrimination?

show them roots. show then the riots of atlanta and watts. or any history themed black movies and it'll be easy to pick up on.

hell, bring'em to the south if ya got money. our white folks are racist and most don't care if you know it. they'll be glad to teach her the significance of it.

and i'm not surprised that any altercation with any race your ignorant of will cause one to slur. to our uneducated minds, it's the worst, most insulting thing to call them. so of course it's a possibility it'll come out.

it's a word of power. racist or not, she has to learn the responsibilty of it. you can show her and educate her, but even that doesn't mean she still won't use it. remember that.

or she could just keep saying it till someone black gets pissed and burns her fathers church down.

I think that the way the term is used in hip hop music for example ie NIGGA and the way its used certinaly amoung black people themselves confuses people less educated about the real root and history of the word Nigger .

When you get into a fight or arguement with someone, you're gonna say whatever you can to offend that person. As long as her use of the word isn't an indication of some deep-running prejudice or hate towards blacks I wouldn't really worry too much about her using it.

having an intelligent argument with somebody is fine, and calling them names is childish, but i suppose acceptable....however, once you call somebody a "nigger" the argument ceases to be about "name calling"...and immediately slams into essentially stating that the person you are arguing with is "less that human"... or a subject of property.

its even in a famous richard prior peice where he talks about being in an argument with someone and they drop the "n" word... how it not only degrades him as a human being, but degrades every black person in America.

peace.

My friend recently started dating this girl who had like wanna be neo nazi friends and said it all the time until they said it around me by actually calling me that. What I did is asked them if they knew what they were saying, explain to them the history and what they are actually telling me you know, they were stupid kids and thought it was funny. Also how saying it at the wrong time will get em in a bad situation, well more like I'm gonna go grab some friends and then you can call us all that, I think that worked the most. They were pretty sheltered people as it seems she is so maybe just starting with the basics, ask her if she knows what she is sayin and what it implies. Sometimes just the overuse of the word makes it seem appropriate to say. I'd really just start with the simplest thing you can think of and ask her if she knows what the fuck she is doing.

Not really. Maybe you americans are oversensitive to the word because of its history, but to me it's just another racial slur.

im Australian, i dont know where your from but over here we understand the social and historical implications of the word, and that it is infact more damaging than any other racial slur around the world.

That's the most subjective thing one can say.
not really, im a white Irish/Australian with blonde hair and blue eyes, so its in no way my subjective evaluation on the word....i think if you did a poll on racial slurs around the globe, it would be an overwhelming general consensus that it is the most offensive, not only ethnic slang, but word in general....

i mean you could call me a "Mick" or an Italian guy a "Guinea"...and it wouldn't have even half the offensive connotations that the word "Nigger" carries...."NiggA" on the other hand can have positive connotations, but thats a whole other debate for another thread...

peace.

So, your opinion is based on what? Certainly not personal experience because, well, you're not Black. Did you see a Black person get insulted with the term "nigger" and they got hurt and "really mad"? Did you watch Oprah? The fairly recent documentary on the word?

Were you ever in the presence of a Serb and a Muslim, and the Serb called the Muslim a "Balija" and the Muslim called the Serb's mother a "Chetnik bitch"?

It's just a thought.

"it would be an overwhelming general consensus that it is the most offensive, not only ethnic slang, but word in general...."
In a country where the word originated, there are people, like the threadstarter mentioned, that don't know the history that comes with the word. You expect the whole world to, therefore, empathize with Black people and understand what the insult brings?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that the insult is not damaging, but I am saying that making a statement like that, one that involves so many factors, is foolish, in a way.

."NiggA" on the other hand can have positive connotations, but thats a whole other debate for another thread...
Indeed, but it's a battle lost that people are failing to admit.

fair points, but you said it was my subjective view...which it cant be if its not from a my personal perspective... subjective is pertaining to or characteristic of an individual; personal; individual....

so therefore it couldn't have been my subjective view on the topic.. that was my point.

and no i have not been in the presence of a Muslim or a Serb and heard "Balija" or.."Chetnik bitch"?...but how many people would speak Serbian as apose to English?...im sure many Serbian people would understand the meaning of the word "Nigger" before a handfull of English speaking people would understand what "Chetnik" or "Balija" means...

....on the same topic, the actual 'most offensive word' i have ever heard is "smeargenkanenhor" (SP?)...its a dutch word meaning "cancer slut" or "cancer whore".... but in terms of who that word is going to insult, let alone hurt or mentally scar...it is not nearly as relevant on a global scale as the word "Nigger".

true....frankly it amazes me that there are people in the country where the word evolved that dont know its social impact... even i studied American slavery, and black oppression in highschool....surely its studied over there too?...

What the fuck are you talking about? If you use the word to offend someone, obviously you have some racism in you. That was an ignorant comment to make, and your excusing blatant prejudice.

No. If I believe different races are of different values, then I have racism in me. There's a huge difference between believing for instance that chinese people aren't humans and getting in a fight with a chinese dude and calling him a fucking chink. You're telling me you never used a racial slur in your life?

I'm sure you have seen some people who purposely make people mad and angry, I for one do it. But do you ever wonder why these people do what they do? Because it's in that all out emotion a person uncontrollably shows their true self. No more composure, no more self-control, everything is unleashed. Psych 101.
