MLB Trade Deadline Discussion

I finally saw some intriguing trade rumors beyond the failing Soriano to Chicago one, so I figured I'd start a thread for discussion. Baseball heads might enjoy this.

From Buster Olney's ESPN Insider blog:
Anybody who has struck rock while using a shovel could relate to the next trade tidbit. Heard from two talent evaluators yesterday that Boston is very active in trying to come up with a large and creative deal, involving more than two teams. Smart thinking, one of them said, if it all works. Crazy stuff you wouldn't normally think of, said another. An executive with an AL team reports that he's heard that a scout was rushed off his area coverage to go scout Boston minor leaguers.

"But here's where the rock-striking part comes into play. I don't know if this is just a pebble of thought on the part of the Red Sox, or if this is a larger trade boulder, like the huge Nomar Garciaparra trade Boston hit on a couple of years ago, with all those moving parts. The Red Sox are looking for pitching, and they've talked about Julio Lugo in the past.

"Red Sox executives are mum; execs from other teams say they are very active.

"Take it for what it's worth."
Maybe something big will happen after all?

Post any news, rumors, or discussion about the MLB trading deadline here.

They have the talent, they just need to get their shit together.

A trade for Lugo might give them a spark. Shouldn't cost as much as Soriano, but it sounds like TB is asking a lot for him.

Miguel Tejada could end up going to the Angels, Rangers, Dodgers or Astros. The problem is that he will not waive his no-trade clause if he is traded to a team that will move him to 3B.

Soriano will be moved by the deadline, most likely to the Astros, Twins, or Angels.

Lugo is getting inquiries from both the Blue Jays and Red Sox. One rumor is that the Sox will trade for Lugo and move him to 2B, then trade Loretta to St. Louis.

The Red Sox just announced that they acquired righthander Bryan Corey from Texas for righthander Luis Mendoza.

Corey has not been added to the active roster, just the 40-man, taking the place of injured pitcher Matt Clement, who was moved to the 60-day disabled list (still retroactive to June 15). He had a 1-1 record with a 2.60 ERA in 16 games with the Rangers.

Roger Clemens' name just won't go away. According to the Globe's Nick Cafardo, a source close to Clemens said today that the Astros pitcher would not ask to be traded even though his frustration level is "through the roof" following another frustrating loss yesterday. Clemens, who struck out nine and allowed just one run in seven innings, earned a no-decision, and though he is 2-4 on the season, owns a 2.09 ERA. Cafardo also reports that the source indicated that Clemens would not exercise a veto (he has a full no trade clause) of a deal as long as he was dealt to a team of his choice. That team would be Boston first and possibly the Yankees. The Providence Journal's Sean McAdam had these interesting tidbits: "Friends of the Rocket insist he's sorry that he chose the Astros over the Red Sox. After finally getting some run support yesterday, the bullpen blew Clemens' lead, leaving him with a 2-4 record. The Astros, meanwhile, are seven games under .500 and six games out of the wild-card race. Clemens would love to be dealt to the Red Sox, but doesn't want to antagonize his hometown by asking for a trade. Similarly, owner Drayon McLane, having won the furious bidding war for Clemens two months ago, doesn't want to alienate Astros fans by dealing Clemens. If Clemens could make a trade seem like the Astros' idea, he'd be all for it. And if the Astros got cover from Clemens and could say that a deal was made at Clemens' request, they'd make it. But since neither side is going to accommodate the other, Clemens is stuck." ... From the Globe's Gordon Edes: "Would the Astros move Roger Clemens? Clemens's agent, Randy Hendricks, said in an e-mail he had no idea what the Astros were thinking. Meanwhile, Astros manager Phil Garner told Fox Sports radio, 'I don't know that Rocket's an option. Now, if Rocket were to come to us and say, Look, I wanna go someplace else for the last month or two, that's a different story. I don't think that we are in a posture of trying to do something with Rocket, or would consider that, unless it were the other way around, that Rocket asked for it. We committed to Rocket. Our owner, Drayton McLane, committed to Rocket and I don't think there's gonna be jumping ship with Rocket.'"

Houston offered Roy Oswalt, Morgan Ensberg and another player to Baltimore for Miguel Tejada, but Houston's owner nixed it after Oswalt was offered. Also, like you said AM, Tejada will not play 3B.

Cubs trade P Greg Maddux and cash to the Dodgers for 3B/SS Cesar Izturis.

and the Devil Rays trade SS Julio Lugo to the Dodgers for 2 minor leaguers.

edit: The Nationals say they will not trade Soriano and will try to work out a long term deal.

^ the Dodgers came out good

the Sox did nothing. i guess they think their pitching will hold when everyone's healthy, or they plane on doing something through waivers.
