"Windows Warning - This copy of Windows is not genuine’"

(Silicon Valley-San Jose, California) - AT THE LOGIN SCREEN: A message stating ‘This copy of Windows is not genuine’ will be permanently tattooed to the bottom righthand corner of the login screen.

[PETALING JAYA:] Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of local PC users running pirated Windows operating systems will soon face the shame of being reminded of their illegal action every time they switch on their machines.

The feature will be added to the operating system by Mi*****ft Corp from tomorrow and cannot be erased. It will nag the guilty users and can be awkward if it shows up on corporate PCs.

There are about six million Windows PC users in the country, according to industry estimates, while anti-piracy watchdog Business Software Alliance has reported that 61% of all software used in local private businesses is illegal.

Current users of PCs running pirated Windows will find their machines “tattooed” the next time they update the operating system.

Basically, a message stating “This copy of Windows is not genuine ...” will be permanently affixed to the operating system’s login screen, and a similar message will randomly pop up on the desktop whenever the machine is in use.

The anti-piracy move is being kicked off in five countries tomorrow – the United States, Britain, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia.

Users whose machines have been affected will only be able to get rid of the tattoo if they install a genuine copy of Windows. Prices range from RM320 for a copy of Windows XP Home (OEM version) to RM510 for Windows XP Pro (OEM version).

“Or they can put up with being ‘nagged’ by the pop-up message every time they use their computers,” said K.T. Ng, group manager for Windows Client solutions at Mi*****ft Malaysia.

If they were businessmen or corporate executives, it would be embarrassing if their clients saw the tattoo indicating that a pirated copy of Windows was being used, he said.

According to Ng, the move was aimed at better serving Mi*****ft’s genuine users.

For example, he said, counterfeiters had been able to reproduce Mi*****ft product packaging to the point where consumers were unable to tell genuine from imitation.

“The pop-up message would immediately alert consumers to counterfeit copies of Windows, such as when they buy a new notebook or PC,” he said.

If a user has unknowingly received an illegal copy of the operating system, he will be able to report the vendor concerned by clicking on the “Get Genuine” button at the login screen.

Machines that have been tattooed will still be able to receive software updates for the operating system, but will not be allowed to download Internet Explorer 7.0 (IE7) and Windows Defender.

IE7 is the new, more secure version of Mi*****ft’s web browser while Windows Defender is an anti-spyware program.

yup, i work for Microsoft's customer service and im sick and tired of people calling expecting free support on a fucken pirated copy of windows xp.

I check their PIDs and find out its illegal, so u tell them, and they fucken start swearing at you and complaning about not taking responsibilty for our products. Well jesus christ asshole, youre pirating software for fuck's sake. I dont care if a customer calls KNOWING he/shes got a pirated copy. U tell them and theyre like: "hmm...yaaaa" U can make a small talk convo about that, laugh it up and just tell them about the advantages/disadvantages of having legit software, and thats it, have a nice day. But sometimes u get these sons of bitches that just really turn your stomach inside out.

ANYWAY!
Q: so PELLA, how can I check whether or not i have a pirated copy of windows xp?!

A: Its pretty simple Billy, click on START, right click on MY COMPUTER and left click on PROPERTIES. Under "registered to" in the GENERALS tab, you should have a long ass number looking something like this:

76477-OEM-0011903-35737

The bolded part of the number is what i look for usually. In my case, i have an OEM copy of windows, which is genuine, but the support warranty isnt directly under microsoft, its under Acer (my computer manucturer). Microsoft would be able to me help, but it'll cost me $45.00

76477-64X-0011903-35737 or 76477-640-0000003-35737

if u have something like this (X being usualy a 0) then you have a PIRATED copy of windows. So FUCK OFF and dont call customer support unless youre ready to dish out $45.00

76477-XXX-0011903-35737

if you have something similar to this (X being numbers, usualy something like 012 or 008 or whatever) then your windows is supported directly under Microsoft. In that case, youre welcome to call 1 800 668 7975 and receive 2 free incidents of support including unlimited installation/un-uninstallion of your windows xp.

Hope you fuckers use this info and spread the word. If you have a pirated copy of windows and you know it, then give us a call, we'll laugh at Microsoft and make fun of Bill Gates (this always happens)
