STAR ARRESTED OVER 'RAPE'

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

The 20-year-old Portuguese international winger is being questioned by Metropolitan Police officers.

Sky News Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said the offence is alleged to have been committed at the Sanderson Hotel in London on October 2.

Ronaldo is thought to have been staying at the hotel after playing against Fulham.

Mr Brunt said the complainant says she met the youngster in a West End nightclub and they went to the hotel together.

The player had voluntarily attended a police station near his Cheshire home, where it is believed he is still being interviewed.

A spokesman for United said the club was not commenting on the arrest.

Ronaldo signed for United in August 2003 from Sporting Lisbon in a £12.24m deal.

He was named the Sir Matt Busby Player Of The Year at the end of his first season.

The Madeira-born player scored in United's 2004 FA Cup final win over Millwall and was a success during Euro 2004.

Yeah, there have been rumours for a while about a "young star" being indicated in a rape case. Apparently Ronnie likes his women. There's a good chance it's an unfounded accusation, someone trying to get some money off him. I certainly hope it is.

Yeah, Persie was on the same cut. But i dunno, even though i hate rapists (i guess we all do, but i'd consider rapists truly the lowest scum of the scum, but okay), it seems all too easy these days to screw a footy player out some money. I mean, investigation has to prove what actually went down, but i wouldn't be surprised if it is a scam.

Whatever happened to the Persie case?

This wouldnt surprise me if it was true, a lot of young footballers are overpaid arrogant idiots who think they are ALLOWED any woman because of their success and fame...having said that we cant sya for sure whether hes guilty or not but i HOPE if he is found guilty hes punished correctly (long ass sentence) and not treated differently because hes a rich footballer

AGENT DENIES RAPE CLAIM

Cristiano Ronaldo's agent has fiercely refuted claims that the Manchester United player raped a woman at a London hotel.

The 20-year-old Portuguese international has been released on police bail after being questioned for several hours over the allegation.

Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes rubbished the accusations, saying they were "totally and categorically repudiated".

"As the investigations will demonstrate, these charges are not based on any credible facts and are clearly the product of the imagination and fantasy of the young lady," he said.

When Ronaldo voluntarily attended a police station in Manchester for questioning, he told officers he was completely innocent.

Two women say they were attacked by him and another man at a penthouse suite in the Sanderson Hotel on October 2 after they met at a nightspot.

Ronaldo, who has told friends he is the victim of a "stitch-up", was arrested by officers from Scotland Yard's Operation Sapphire team, which investigates sex crime.

A second man in his 30s, who is said to have been with him on the night, also kept an appointment at the police station but was not arrested.

Manchester United have refused to comment.

The claims follow a series of high-profile cases involving sex allegations against footballers.

In September last year, two Premiership players were interviewed but not charged over an alleged gang rape at the Grosvenor House hotel in London.

Last year three Leicester City players faced allegations of sexually assaulting three women in a five-star hotel on a training camp in Spain.

They spent six nights in jail there but all charges against them were dropped.

In January last year, rape charges were dropped against ex-Chelsea player Jody Morris and a friend after they were accused of raping a woman in Leeds.

Arsenal's Dutch striker Robin van Persie was held for two weeks in Rotterdam earlier this year after being accused of rape. He maintains his innocence.

He has been cleared!!!

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo will not face criminal charges over allegations he raped a woman in a London hotel suite.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) says there is insufficient evidence to prosecute the Portuguese international winger.

Ronaldo, 20, has always maintained his innocence.

Police launched an inquiry following allegations of a serious sexual assault at a central London hotel on October 2.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We have been informed today by the CPS that there is insufficient evidence to charge.

"As such, the two men arrested during the course of this investigation will face no further action by police in connection with this matter."

Ronaldo was questioned for several hours last month after voluntarily attending a police station in Manchester.

The star told police officers he was innocent and he was bailed to return pending further inquiries.

Initially, two women made an allegation of rape, claiming they were assaulted by Ronaldo and another man at the Sanderson Hotel in London.

One of the women later withdrew her claims.
