Male circumcision cuts female AIDS risk

#1
Male circumcision, which has been shown to protect men from infection with the AIDS virus, appears to protect women, too, US and Ugandan researchers have reported.

Circumcising men reduced infections in their female partners by 30%, the researchers found. One said the difference may be related to the structure of the foreskin, which is removed in circumcision.

In the study of more than 300 Ugandan couples in which the man infected the woman, the researchers found that 299 women caught HIV from uncircumcised partners and only 44 were infected by circumcised men.

Circumcision also reduced the risk of infection with other sexually-transmitted diseases such as trichomonas and bacterial vaginosis, but not syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia, the researchers told an AIDS meeting in Denver.

Dr. Thomas Quinn of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore has been leading a team that studies 12,000 volunteers in Rakai, Uganda. They have been studying transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS.

Reduced transmission

Last year, they reported that circumcised men were less likely to become infected with HIV. Now, they told the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, it appears that among infected men, circumcision reduces the likelihood they will transmit the virus through sex.

They also presented more evidence that circumcision protects men. They re-analyzed previous studies and found that circumcision reduced the risk of HIV infection in men by 50% - and by 70% in the highest-risk men.

The findings will have to be confirmed in other groups before being used as the basis for recommendations, Quinn said.

However, he added, "early indications are dramatic." If borne out, for every 15 to 60 circumcisions, one case of HIV infection could be prevented, he said.

Condoms work better.

But seriously, can someone explain to me how circumcision makes a difference?
They're not very plently in the African jungle or for that one time you couldn't find or didn't have one.

I think aids is actually a good thing. :thumb:
viva la aids!

circumcision is better for hygene. i guess sex is "cleaner" when one is circumcized.
i think that men get infected mainly because of small skin cuts on the penis, from friction. maybe more loose skin means there's more chance of being infected.

lol, i think any professional research would have taken this into consideration.

I'm not that unwilling to believe it, but im having trouble picturing how exactly it's going to make disease contraction (and then most notably AIDS)more difficult. The article doesnt explain.

well its probably because if the man has foreskin, the virus could hide under the foreskin where its warm, without the foreskin the virus would probably die. I'm no Foreskin-ologist so i don't know

AIDS wouldn't survive under the foreskin. It can only be via blood or sexual fluids. And it's a lot harder to catch it off a woman than to give it to a woman.

i dont believe in that. i mean circumcized or not, the girl is still gonna get aids if the guy has it.

anyways to avoid all risks, people please use condoms, thank you.
