Liverpool Given Champion's League Place

Liverpool have been awarded a place in next season's UEFA Champions League first qualifying round.

The European champions will start their qualifying campaign on 12/13 July - with return legs to be played on 19/20 July.

Liverpool had initially been told that they would not be able to defend their trophy, won in a penalty shoot-out against Milan, because they finished outside of the top four in The Premiership.

However, after extensive negotiations, Uefa's executive committee have now concurred on Liverpool's participation.

Rafa Benitez's side now face an exhausting close-season as they will have to play six games to secure a place in the group stages of Europe's premier competition.

Uefa's director of communications, William Gaillard, has spoken exclusively to Sky Sports News and has explained his organisation's decision and the implications for future seasons.

''I think we are looking for a quieter summer at this stage!'' Gaillard told Sky Sports News.

''We have basically amended the rule to make sure there is no ambiguity left.

''As you can see from our statement that says title holders will always have the right to defend the title and therefore qualify automatically - whilst at the same time the number of clubs per national association will remain stable.

''As we say also, Liverpool will be included in the English market pool share with the status of the lowest placed English club.

''There will still be some financial burden on the other four clubs, these calculations will take place later.

''It was decided reasonably quickly and it was a consensus position after the different aspects were examined and taken into account.''

Manchester City had been hoping Liverpool's participation in the Champions League would free up a Uefa Cup spot but Gaillard has now poured cold water on this suggestion.

''Man City don't get a place. As you can see from the list, we transferred Liverpool from the Uefa Cup but kept the number of clubs in European competitions stable. So that means Bolton and Middlesbrough will represent England in the Uefa Cup,'' he concluded.

''The executive committee decided this was the best solution possible.''
I'm happy for them, they deserve it.

Rules are rules. Other teams & FAs have had to adhere to them & now they're just changed for Liverpool? Bullshit.

Sure, it's changed for everyone now, but initially, it's for Liverpool.

Yes, pure biased bullshit, the team basically gives up all hope in their league, and totally focuses on champions league for the top end of the season, clearly giving them an advantage, on the sole notion that they can return to champions league by winning the title.

I wonder which team is getting the axe because of this, Everton?? You'd see some blood being spewed over england if thats the case.

Changes have to start somewhere. UEFA changed the rules based on the Liverpool case because they realised how unfair it was.

They didn't give up on the season, they were always trying to secure fourth place. What notion? Nobody assumed they'd get a Champion's League spot by winning it. Early indications, before and after the final, were that Liverpool would NOT get a CL spot unless they finished in the top 4.

No team is "getting the axe", Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Everton AND Liverpool are all in the Champion's League.

I don't see how it's bullshit. A championship team should be given the right to defend IT'S title no matter what.

I'm always for the defending champs making the Final's of a championship. For example, I feel that Detroit should be playing in the NBA Final.. and rightfully so.. they won it the previous year, they deserve to be back in the finals.

Peace

If not Everton, some other team in another league will be getting the axe to make space for liverpoop in the group stages. And how do you know Liverpool was trying their best to make it to fourth place, when week in and week out Gerrard was mysteriously injurred, they were resting their best players.

And Shocka, bad comparison, because the pistons had to claw their way back to the NBA championship, by making the playoffs, whereas liverpool hasn't earned their right to do so, becaue they failed to make the "playoffs".

As I stated, I understand this. It just annoys me that it's happened in this instance. They could've at least waited a year before implementing the new rules - most rules do take on a "waiting period" of kinds. Plus, there's been enormous arrogance expressed on behalf of many of Liverpool's supporters in this case - it kind of pisses me of that their "divine right" has come to fruit.

Every team rests players before big games. Chelsea did it before CL games, United and Arsenal did it before big FA Cup games...it's common sense. You're acting as if Liverpool put their reserves out in the league and saved all their first string players for the CL.

And like I said, they were trying to secure 4th place so they'd get into the Champion's League next year.

Well Liverpool aren't getting the same treatment future winners will. Future winners will displace the lowest placed team in their league (so Everton would have been pushed into the UEFA Cup, had those rules been in place this year).
