The Globe's Gordon Edes reported Thursday that a deal has been put in place for the Red Sox to acquire former All-Star catcher Javier Lopez through a waiver wire trade. The deal is expected to be announced on Friday. If true, the move would help offset the loss of team captain Jason Varitek, who had knee surgery Thursday. With the Orioles this season, Lopez hit .265 with eight homers and 31 RBIs in 76 games.
I don't expect him to be th eold Javu, but it'll be interesting to see how he does with consistent PT.

I'd say he's a great temporary replacement.

He is not better than Varitek this year. Few catchers have been.

Varitek hasn't been hitting as well because he's been nursing injuries all year, but his presence behind the plate is irreplaceable.
