Estrogen-like compounds called phytoestrogens found in soya, tofu
and legumes bind to estrogen receptors, decrease sperm counts and
have feminizing effects. British scientists identified a chemical
called genistein, which depressed sperm counts and sperm activity
in rats and humans. Pregnant women who eat these foods may be
impacting the future fertility of their sons. Phytoestrogens -
found in many foods and environmental pollutants - may be a major
concern to bodybuilders because they decrease testosterone levels
and exert estrogen-like effects. Athletes who knowingly eat
phytoestrogens in their diets could impair training gains and make
it more difficult to cut body fat. At this point, we don't know
enough about these chemicals to make recommendations to weight
trained athletes.
