I have an Ipod and have had a similar problem. I feel your pain. What I do is I plug my ipod in and 2 seconds later I open Itunes, it seems to recognise it then.

Yeah there is still a lawsuit that is still going through courts in which Apple admitted about the battery problem. I received the letter 3 months ago signed it and sent it back. They will be giving me a $50 gift certificate once everything goes through. It is only for the 1, 2, 3 generation ipods. Check out ilounge.com and click on their forums. Do a search for the apple battery lawsuit.

DPG: Open up your "ipod folder" and open up "updater." Does your computer recognize your ipod? I am hoping it is not a software or harddrive issue with your ipod. Come on over to www.ilounge.com and click on forums. There are hundreds of users that are more knowledgeable on this. I been helped before over there.

It's because you don't disconnect the ipod properly from your P.C. You can't just shut down the P.C or remove the Ipod. It's like an external HD and you need to treat it like that. My brothers does the same due to his abuse.
