Intelligent Design

The topic of discussion is; Should Intelligent Design be taught in science lessons?. Not "Is Intelligent Design correct?" or "Is Evolution correct?". Bear that in mind.

With the big debate about whether or not ID constitutes "science" (and therefore whether or not it should be taught alongside, or instead of, evolution) I figured I'd see what people on the board think.

I'd request that you state whether or not you're religious when you explain your view, just to see if there's a pattern there (and we all know there will be).

If you need ask, I'm against Intelligent Design being taught in science lessons.

I wouldn't describe myself as being religious. Here's my opinion:

P1: All scientific theories are falsifiable.
P2: Intelligent Design doesn't make testable predictions; and thus, isn't falsifiable.
C: Intelligent Design is not a scientific theory.

Save Intelligent Design for the philosophy classes. In it's current form, it has no place in science classes.

i'm not religious

i think it is ok to teach intelligent design in a private school. i dont feel there is a place for it in public schools since too many people view intelligent design as sort of a religious topic.

in my honest opinion intelligent design should only be taught in public schools if you teach the theory that humans were created by space aliens from another world, in the intelligetn design course.

Im agnostic but I do believe that it should be tought. Students should be able to analyze as much information as possible. Teach it, let them consider it, and then destroy the idea or embrace it. Obivously it would be unethical to teach correctness on either one, but provide the students with all sides of everything, thats my theory.

One of the reasons Americans in general(im american btw), is becuase the schools systems are so determined to focus on things they want you to teach. The schools are not set up to provide a person with critical thinking skills, or even to provide them an oppurtunity to explore information outside of what the school system provides.

leave intelligent design in philosophy class or religion class. Science class should stick to SCIENCE

i learned about t in philosophy, as well as other theories of creation.

although "intelligent design" is kinda misleading and be interpreted in many ways, some of which are quite scientific

Taught? It should not be TAUGHT but it should be mentioned and explained but only as "many people believe..." but it's criticisms should be showed.

I don't mean "taught" as in "This is Intelligent Design, this is how it happened..." but taught alongside Evolution as a possible theory.

Should "it's criticisms...be showed [sic]" in science class? It's not a scientific theory (unless you broaden the definition of a scientific theory, which is what they'd like to do) and it's rejected by the majority of scientists.

First of all I’m not a believer of religion, of heaven or hell or any of the like. With that being said I am completely against “Intelligent Design” being taught along “Evolutionary Theory” in a science curriculum as if it held any sort of tenable empirical evidence other than blind over zealous faith.

Too me this whole “Intelligent Design” nonsense is just some under cover ploy for the religious right to sneak their God and creationism back into public schools and bypass the law that separates state and church. I’m not saying religion has no place in public schools per- se because it does, in a philosophy class that focuses on comparative religion, but not in a science class! To do so is a mockery and a blasphemy to the methodology of all that is the scientific thought.

If you’re following the news the state of Kansas just passed new legislation 6-4, saying that intelligent design will be taught along side evolution.

Is astrology now going to be part of the syllabus now? What about dowsing or spoon-bending? It's ridiculous that a school can be pressured into rewriting the definition of a scientific theory to include something that scientists don't accept as a theory!

Unfortunately for us Brits, Tony Blair is also creationist-friendly.
