Injuries shelve Benoit, HBK

The dreaded injury bug has hit WWE in a big way as former world champions Chris Benoit and Shawn Michaels came out with injuries in a 24-hour span last week. To explain his condition on "Raw,'' Michaels was put in a 5-on-1 match against the entire Spirit Squad. At the end of the match the Squad decided to go to work on the knee of HBK, and even removed his knee brace to inflict maximum damage. Michaels was taken from the ring on a stretcher, and the diagnosis is torn knee ligaments that will require surgery in the near future. As for Benoit, at the "SmackDown!'' tapings Tuesday night, the Rabid Wolverine suffered a shoulder injury that could keep him sidelined for a couple of months. The good news for WWE is that Batista is on the mend and should be back on WWE TV in the coming weeks. In addition, Randy Orton's suspension ends June 13.

AROUND THE RING: WWE has confirmed the return of ECW, and the first new TV show will be June 13 on the Sci-Fi Network, just two nights after "One Night Stand'' ... There is a rumor that The Sandman could face JBL at the ECW pay-per-view. ... Because partners Johnny Nitro and Joey Mercury could not get along on the road and backstage, management decided to split them up. Thus, Nitro and Melina are on their way to "Raw.'' ... TNA has extended an official offer to Goldberg.
