Technology I want to rearrange my disks.

#1
I have all my files and programs on my C disk together. i want to split into two disks. i want to leave all my music and small folders on C disk and move all programs to D disk. currently my D disk is a dvd drive.

I knew how to do this before but i learned doing that on different computer. i tried to do myself on my computer but i couldnt figure out.
you go to that blue looking screen data or something like that it's called i think and you split your C disk into C & D disks and put majority of space on whichever disk you want to have your big files like music and put less space on the other disk for the programs since programs doesnt take much of the space.
I tried to do that but kinda got lost and definetly backed down because i didnt want to mess up my computer.

So, how do i split C disk into C & D disks step by step tell me how you do that. and i need to know where do i put my dvd drive on and how do i do that.

Just to have better picture here is it the picture..

You would have to make another partition to split the disks up. You would more than likely have to format one of the partitions also and re install windows. Your D: drive is auto assigned to D: because of the cable hooked up to it. I know you dont want to but the best thing to do would be a full format, then create two partitions, C: and E: or whatever.

edit. You could also try a partition program like partition magic but im not familiar with those programs.

Thats fine. let D: be auto. i can use other partitions C: & E: maybe.

But, re-installing wondows deletes my programs and files does it not? (unless i do back up, burn all my files to cd's and then put it back on which i dont want to do cause i have way too many files and it take me forever.)
any way i can re-install windows and the files and programs stay as it was before and not get delete?

Nope, In order to re-install windows you have to format the drive which deletes everything and makes it basicly brand new. If you have a external drive or know somebody with one you could back up all your files to that. Then you would just have to install all your programs again. I format and re-install windows atleast twice a year. I like doing it actually.

Programs is not the issue. i have all the common programs burned on cd that i can re-install once they get deleted. but the files is what i dont want to loose. i have about 30GB worth of music files.

And i dont have that external drive you talking about.

So, i guess i gotta stick with what i have.

Reason why i wanted to split into two disks is because i was told that way if i get viruse or some shit like that it will be much easier to clean up and it would have much less of a chance to get that viruse in your programs and other files. but i dont really understand that though.
do you or somebody you know that does that, splits into two disks cause of same reason?

BTW, how that external thingy works and about how much i can get that?

You can get an external hardrive off www.newegg.com for under a hundred dollars. Its just like a regular hard drive. You plug it into your USB port and it works just like a internal hardrive. They are really handy. All you would have to do is copy your music files, pics, ect over to the external hardrive. Then you could format the hardrive in your comp. Make two partitions, install windows, then just copy all your files from the external drive back to your computer. About the split into to disk question. Say you have a 100 gig hardrive. Some people like to reserve 5 gigs just for all your windows files and have your programs and other stuff on the other 95 gigs. Basicly the reason for this is so that most viruses wont have a chance to get in your windows files. They will more than likely just affect your program files.
