When i first heard of black history month I though it was the dumbest and most racist thing the US could do. It basically is segregating the African Americans from American history. It's sad.

This is also why Morgan Freeman is one of my favorite actors because he translates his intellect into his roles.

Pretty much.

If races stop saying "It's because i'm [black, brown, white...]" the younger generation will stop hearing it and only learn about how it really was.

If they don't that shit will go to "Dude pulled me over cause i'm black." ...a week later, that kid will hate cops....then the 'white man.'

I agree with Morgan Freeman, but if they stop Black History month, won't the ignorant/young "black" people think the US is being racist?

Well, Black History Month was a way of recognizing African-Americans who contributed to history but weren't, as artistic gurl points out, mentioned in the history books. It served a purpose in bringing awareness. Is it necessary now? Well, I think to this day the K-12 education doesn't focus enough on African-American achievements. The focus is always on slavery. There's no White History Month because Whites wrote the history, Mr. Freeman. It's not about relegating history to a month, it's about using a period of time to bring increased awareness to the history. Also, I disagree that you stop racism by not mentioning it or by not identifying people by their color and nationality. I think dialogue on race is key to stopping racism.

Agreed. I think celebrating differences is good, it's positive. I feel like the majority of people want to pretend we are all the same, when we're not. It doesn't mean any one race is above the other but we all have different things to bring.

IDK, I agree with some of what you said but not all of it.. to the OP.

I think Black History Month has good intentions but isn't really helpful. Overall, history classes/texts need to be corrected so that it's all inclusive. Because you end up learning a lot about the same figures in African American history over and over each year in February. The rest of the year.. nothing. Then there's Hispanic History Month which tends to only focus on Mexicans and blah. It maybe has good intentions but now it needs to be re-examined and perhaps cut out all together.

yea, history really needs to be re-taught and revisited, cuz MLK and Rosa Parks aren't the only inspirational people to the oppressed. Black history really lacks a loooot of other black history. Anywayz, me being black myself, I still kinda disagree with the idea of having a month dedicated to it. The world isnt ready for it, just like how so many black folk aint ready for a black president like Pac said. The school systems, who out of the shortest month of the year, teaching this limited history really dont deserve the right to do it, i believe. I think it should be done in homes or done at institutions run by black professionals.

So basically instead of addressing the root of the problem and changing history books and classes they pull a publicity stunt like this. That's all it is really. To show people that "America" cares about the blacks, too.

I can see how by not mentioning racism it may just bottle up until it erupts but I agree that identifying someone by their colour is unnecessary. Why does he have to be black, you white and me brown? Why can't he just be Morgan Freeman, you SOFI and me Farzin?

When we teach our children to identify different people by their colour we basically teach them to separate them from one another. That will always lead to them vs us. That is how racial hatred is born.

Black History Month is hardly a publicity stunt. A variation of it was started in like the 1920s, by a Black scholar. It was different times, man. It just continued on and evolved. Segregation wasn't that long ago.

Nobody is arguing that the root of the problem shouldn't be addressed. It should. The interesting thing is that schools devote a lot of time and resources into Black History Month so it's one way that students/school board members should demand more education and not just education stuffed in one month's worth of classes.

We need a way of categorizing people. It makes life easier. Also, the fact is, we are NOT the same. But it doesn't have to be a bad thing.

When we teach our children to identify different people by their colour we basically teach them to separate them from one another. That will always lead to them vs us. That is how racial hatred is born.
No. Racial hatred is born by promoting lies, stereotypes, and ignorance, not by acknowledging that people are different.

If you teach your kid that way, you're not embracing diversity but actually going against it. The fact is, people on this Earth are NOT the same. We share different views, come from different cultures, and look different. We can teach kids not to HATE these differences, but we are doing the kids a misfortune by teaching them that these differences don't exist. The key is teaching tolerance and embrace of diversity.

White racists couldn’t agree with Morgan more. Blacks shouldn’t have anything, let alone a month. This is a case where some smarts (as Freeman certainly has) gets one on the wrong track. He’s coming to their conclusion, yet from a different angle, of course. First, we’re not relegating it to a month, Morgan. Just because we denote something as belonging in a certain month doesn’t mean that it belongs in that month alone. It’s not relegated to Feb; it’s emphasized in Feb. Big difference. I’ve even heard some people say we need to merge black history into American history. But in fact it’s not separate! Black History Month is not History. It’s a nationwide celebration, acknowledgment and remembrance. The academic subject of History includes everything that’s studied in history, with concentrations in various areas.

Monday was Martin Luther King day. Are we relegating him to just one day? No, we’re making a time to honor his memory and keeping his message alive. In Feb, we are honoring and remembering the history of blacks in this country, since it and black people have not been honored for so long. If anything, every month should be Black History month since must people still don’t know much of it. And it’s not just for or about black people. It’s for everyone, esp whites who shaped black history in a big way. And they need to remember, recognize and acknowledge that past that they were a part of. In fact, since white people had such a big part in shaping the history of blacks in this country, maybe it should be called White History month. Then when little Tommy asks his Mom why it’s called white history month when it’s all about black people, that will really be an education for him.

How’s about we get rid of Women’s History month. We need to stop segregating women and let them join the human race. When we teach our children to identify different people by their gender we basically teach them to separate them from one another. That will always lead to them vs. us. Let’s not celebrate anything because it’s relegating and segregating and perpetuating the separation. Black History month does not perpetuate racism in our society! If anything, it helps keep it away. Instead of taking some time out every year to educate people about one of the most important things about this nation and how we got here, let’s just allow negative images of young black males to define the black community for everyone, as it still mostly does. Instead of black history month, let’s have gangsta rap music month.

Black history month and all the others are about DIVERSIFYING American and world history. It just shouldn’t be called black history. It should be called black heritage. If everyone was the same, we wouldn’t need it. But we’re not all the same. We’re in a world and a nation with diverse people who have a history.

Like Sofi pointed out. You don't get rid of prejudice by underplaying differences. You get rid of it by getting everyone to accept and celebrate differences. Black history month is one small way you do that.

As a foreigner (from a US perspective), for me the idea of Black History Month isn't about black folks, but about civil rights. Which is a cause worth celebrating anytime.

I'm not really a fan of things like these and these ideas of "X" month are strange to me but I guess their point is to rise awareness. It's funny how people want to see racism everywhere, even if something tries to actually fight it.
I don't think that people should get all that sensitive about this matter.
