does anyone know how to add a password to a hard disk drive, i have 2 hard drives, one is for business files, which im trying to figure out how to lock so important files on it will not be deleted by other people around here. is there a way for me to put a lock on it so that in order to add/remove/or view files on it the password has to be typed in. any help would be great.

First off you have to be the Administrator and the only Administrator.
If you are using windows XP log off of the computer. At the log in screen Press CTRL, ALT, DELETE all at the same time twice. This will bring up the Administrative LOG on. Type Administrator as the user name and then enter the administrative password or no password for the administrator if left blank.

Second Once you have logged on to Windows Press CTRL, ALT, Delete at the same time again and then change the Administrative password to anything as log as you can remember it and no one else can guess it.

Third you have to start setting up some account privileges. You have to go into Administrative Tools to do this. You can find Administrative tools in the control panel and also under the start menu if it is enabled. Under Administrative tools you want to click on computer management. Under computer management you want to click on local users and groups. Under local Users and Groups You will find a listing of all of the accounts on your computer.

For every other account other than the Administrative account you want to change their file access permissions. You do this by clicking on groups under users. The first group listed will be Administrators you should click on administrators and see what names are listed under Administrators. You probably want to remove everybody you see here other than the administrator or administrators by adding them to the users group. Once you have added them to the users group you can delete them from the administrators group.

What this does is it secures the computer so that only the administrator can have access to a hard disk that you as the administrator are going to lock other users from getting into next.

Next locking the hard drive. Click on my computer. Then right click on the disk that you want to lock. Under the security tab click add.

Type Administrators then click ok. Then under permissions you want to check all of the boxes that are listed under allow. Then you want to remove everyone by clicking on everyone then clicking remove.

Now only the Administrator or another user that has administrative privileges can access this disk. Make sure when you’re done using the computer to log off.

I am not responsible for any damage this may occur to your computer. Do not attempt to try this stuff if you are a computer illiterate.

Here are 3 way you can encrypt your data so no one can read it..

1. Yes if you are using Windows NT, 2000, XP or server 2003 you can encrypt a file, a group of files, or a folder by right clicking on the file and choosing properties. Under the general tab click on the advance button. Then check the box that gives you the option to encrypt the contents to secure data. Then only you can open and view the files providing that you have administrative privileges and that your password for logging onto windows is unique to you and that no one else has your password.

2. YES you can use a program like PGP Pretty good privacy available for free as long as you are a US citizen. With this program you can encrypt files or folders that only you can open.

3. Yes you can use a Program like win RAR or win ZIP to make encrypted archives of files and folders that only you can extract using your password.
