Go into safe mode and run your anti-virus software. Also while you are there run adaware or spybot search and destroy. Also make sure your definitions for both anti-virus and spyware are up to date. See if that helps.

to prevent this from happening in the future, here are a few GREAT ideas:

1. throw the computer away
2. stop using windows and study linux (harder to get virus's and such)

Another technique I used, which works alot but takes ALOT of paying attention to. Simply go to any simple site like download.com or something and find the LEAST known virus and firewall programs. Make sure they are up to date though. It's best to get programs that are just being released.
I say this because most people write virus's and trojans to automatcially shut down MANY virus and firewall programs once on your computer. So it's best to have something they don't know about or don't feel like adding to their list of programs to kill.
As for the spyware and adware.. theres no better way to say this.. stay out of the porn, casinos, and MOST file sharing programs.

When you do alt, ctrl & delete click on the applications tab and what is running? Also check the other tabs and see if youre computer is running other processors. So in safe mode you ran an antivirus program and nothing came out of it? Also a spyware application? If not then I would believe that it might be a .dll file corrupt or missing which is giving you problems. You cn also go to microsoft's website and type in your problem I really don't know what else I can tell you.

go to start, run, then type msconfig, press ok

go to the startup tab, uncheck everything

go to the services tab, uncheck everything that doesnt have MICROSOFT CORPORATION as manufacturer. go to ok,then restart ur computer

if it works, then start checking small groups of things that u unchecked before, and then u will find out what is causing this issue.

The following is the procedure to perform Destructive Recovery on the system which will restore the system to factory settings:

NOTE: Please remove any additional hardware like printer, scanner and camera prior starting this procedure.

This procedure will erase the complete data on the C: drive, reinstalls the operating system, device drivers and bundled software.

1. Restart the PC.
2. When the blue screen with the HP Invent logo appears, press the F10 key on the keyboard. (You only have a few seconds to press the F10 key before the normal startup process continues.)
3. When the System Recovery program opens, Select Destructive System Recovery
5. Click Next to proceed.
6. Click Yes on the next screen to confirm you want to continue with the System Recovery process.
7. Follow the onscreen instructions.
8. When the recovery program finishes, click Restart to restart the computer.

was told to do this, gonna lose all my files :(

I guess it could be a virus. Is that the only problem you have? Where you can't get past the startup screen unless you press ctrl+alt+del? I'm not an expert with shit like this, but i've always managed to fix my computer when it had problems. Now you said you did a system restore and that didn't work, so that's no longer an option.

1. Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and do a FULL system scan. I'm talking about viruses AND spyware. It will probably take a while, but it's obviously worth it. And I don't mean a long time, I mean like 1-2 hours maybe. If it finds any viruses and/or spyware when the scan is done, make sure you delete them right away. I know you said you already ran a virus scan, but it wouldn't hurt to try it again.

2. I know someone else already said this, but go back to start -> run -> and type in msconfig. In the startup tab, make sure nothing unsual is checked. You don't have to uncheck anything though! The ones that are checked automatically start up when you log onto your computer, so you might have stuff you want. Me personally, I uncheck everything since I can just open whatever I want anyway. I recommend you do the same so you never have a problem where you aren't sure whether or not you had something checked or unchecked before.

Not really sure what else to recommend. If you need to though, send me all your mixes/acapellas whatever else you want and i'll save them to a disc for you and send them back when/if you format. :thumb:

How new is your HP? I think thoses fuckers made it to where you cant format and lose all the HP settings, you keep them. So the way they told you is prolly the only way to do it. If not, to format you would put your XP cd in, restart your computer and boot from cd. Select the format option on the xp cd, delete the primary partition, create a partition, format that partition, then reinstall windows.
