Are they a good exercise to build up your quads? Im trying to build up my legs more. I have tried the other type of squats where you hold the barbell on your shoulders, but im limited in the amount of weight i can lift doing these. I dont have a squat rack, so i have to lift the barbell from the ground, over my head and onto my shoulders. so are hack squats a good alternative because i can lift a lot more weight doing them. I did them for the first time the day the before yesterday, and my quads are still sore after them.lol

You should invest in some more free weights.. barbells, get some plates and clips.. etc. If you're a beginner you want to start off with your basic back squat. Just wrk on overall development. Feet shoulder width apart with toes slightly pointed outwards. Go ass to grass.. thrust your hips outward on your way down and keep your back tight and str8. Dnt evr go too heavy on squats, they're are a very dangerous exercise.. Its easy to damage your spine just like when doing deadlifts. I actually do a different type of squat evry wrk, coupled with other exercises. I like to target a specific parts of my quads each wrkout. I do front squats, back squats, and powerlifting squats. Hack squats are similar to front squats, they help keep your back str8 so you can hit the quads betr. I do them cuz I'm tall (5'-9" ..yeah I'm a giant I knw. Lol), I tend to lean forward on the way up when I do back squats which ends up building the lower back and upper thighs.

About the soreness.. try to take in plenty of protein and carbs, healthy nutritious food. And get plenty of sleep.. You dnt build muscle in the gym.. just remembr that.

Hope that helped.
