Google gets gobby

So, Google has launched its own VoIP (Voice over IP, or the 'Internet telephone') and IM service. It's called Google Talk. Is this the end of every other communications company on the planet? In a word: yes. Google owns you all now, put down your guns and bow to the mighty power of the multicoloured logo. Not only will you do all your web searches via Google, but now you will make your phone calls and do your instant messaging over its network.

We're all for dictatorships, but only benign ones. Luckily Google has never invaded another country or even so much as stepped on a snail on a wet winter's morning. As global-communications-monopolies-in-the-making go, this is a fairly friendly looking one. What harm could a website that changes its livery to include cartoon hearts on Valentine's Day possibly cause? None whatsoever. Doom-mongers silence those trumpets through which you spit Eminem lyrics. Google means you no harm -- we hope.

I would tell you whether it's good or not, but it's not working for me.

It's still an early version of the program, and Google say they'll be adding features as time goes on.

"According to our friends at Google, there's a lot in store for Google Talk. Google is keenly interested in keeping the protocol open, and in fact you can access Google Talk's servers with any Jabber-compatible client like Trillian, Gaim, Adium X, and iChat. (If you have one of these, I'm told you can connect using server talk.google.com and port 5222.) Google tells us that SIP support is coming soon and are in talks with Skype, AOL, and Yahoo! concerning interoperability.

Another big feature they're working on is "joint search," which would allow two or more Google Talk buddies using Google and surfing the web together. This would be a natural segue to the fabled Google Browser, but there is as yet no confirmation from Google.

Google also tells us that they don't yet have solid plans on making money with the service, but plan on using it to drive users to Gmail."

Not compatible with Mac or Linux, though.

Oh my god...I think my 6 year loving of AIM will come to an end. I'll definitely download it. Depends on if enough people use it will be the question.

I see it becoming bigger than AIM and MSN in the future, simple because, well, it's google, what else can you expect.

Damn i remember using google before they blew up back in 98,when they first started up.That was my favorite search engine then, and it still is now.
