Giving Serial Killers Day Parole

#1
I only caught the tale end of this discussion on The Wright Stuff this morning, so I might have missed some of the story.

"The Yorkshire Ripper" Peter Sutcliffe, who killed 13 women and attacked many more, wants to be let out for a day to see his sister, who is dying of cancer (she's not able to go to visit him, so he would have to be let out to visit her). Should he be allowed to? If a dying woman wants to see her brother one last time before she dies, should she be allowed to? Is it not her right?

As I recall, Sutcliffe was allowed out before to see where his father's ashes had been scattered.

Let him out and see his sister. Bu make sure he can't escape, make sure he's put back into jail right after that lil visit.

@ breal: Well, maybe his sister deserves t osee him, if it's her last wish?

so the other way round. she deserves to see him, yes. if she wants and could, but shes not able to visit him. therefore i dont know...i mean, like i said i dont think he deserves anything anymore but rotting in his cell. although its her wish to see him i dont think hes got the "right" to visit her...

It would be downright cruel to not allow it, really. If we stop treating convicted murderers and criminals as humans, won't that make us just as bad as them?

Take the bloke out, lug up for 4 coppers with him and take him to his sister for a couple of hours. What's the problem?

That's how I see it. He will be back in his cell soon enough.

well i c your point but he killed 13!!! people. in my eyes he deserves nothing good anymore. no day out of jail, no visiting of his relatives, nothing.

IMO he doesn't have any rights anymore. But, you have to look at his sister's point as well. I think they should shackle him up and escort him to see her. Maybe it will upset her to see him shackled up but oh well, he killed people and now he's paying for it so if she wants to see him bad enough, she'll accept any way he can be there.

Don't know if you're kidding, but I was also thinking that if his sister is in such a state that it may traumitize him or at least cause him pain, then my opinion may sway.

Deny criminals rights of any kind?

That sounds scary to me. Denying a certain group any type of rights is a bit, oh, i don't know, say, undemocratical? Dictatorial?

At least it doesn't really fit in our democratic bastion we call home.

I couldn't give a toss for the current idea of deomcracy!

No offence intended towards you Duke but really, 'democratic' countries are doing 'undemocratic' things right, left & centre & usually against the people's will.

I think most people would support a campaign to have certain criminal's rights taken away & thus, my point is that countries could do 'undemocratic' things when actually called for.

Btw, there are very few countries I recognize as democratic.
