England 3 - 2 Argentina

The match today was awesome. Not just the result (though that was great), but the entire match. Reminded me why football is the greatest sport on the planet. If we can play like that in the World Cup - and considering we were missing Neville and Cole and considering Lampard had an off-day - we could do very well.

P.S. Wayne Rooney will be the best player in the world.

England weren't at home, the game was played at a neutral venue in Geneva, Switzerland. Rooney got England's first goal, Owen (all 5ft nothin of him) scored two headers

September 1st, 2001, Munich. Remind me what the score was?

Scored and was generally magnificent. Should have had a goal earlier then he did, but the ball defied all laws of physics and hit the post.

i agree wit u illu...the match was great and yeh we can win tha world cup if we carry on playin like that

but if we dont have Rooney we dont have a chance...hes the best player for england and will deffo become the best player in the world. big clap for him controlling his temper yestaday as well!!!

i thought steven gerrard was off-form as well as lampard and Bridge did not cope with the challenge and taking him off was the right decision as konchesky performed well. nothing can be said about Crouch...y he is in the engand squad and why he was chosen above defoe is beyond me...he runs around like a headless chicken wivout a clue wot to do

but overall deffo a good strong england performance...shedding new light onto our world cup dreams

England can't win the World Cup, don't be silly...

LoL at Rooney becoming the best player in the world, he's no where near, look at dudes like Ronaldo, he was world player of the year at 18 years old, even C Ronaldo is better than Rooney... and that's the truth.

1) Argentina were the better team.

2) Rooney was sheer class but so was Riquelme.

3) I don't believe England has what it takes mentally to win the World Cup.

Peace.

thx gav. i miss posts like that ;)

Nobody's saying they're gonna win it.

20 years old. Rooney won World Young Player of the Year at 19. If he's the best young player in the World, why is it ridiculous for him to be the best player in the world in a few years time? Because he's English? Because he doesn't have a tan and an exotic sounding name?

even C Ronaldo is better than Rooney... and that's the truth.
You're not serious?

Wayne Rooney is almost always the best player on the pitch for England and for Man Utd.

Brazilian legend Zico compared him to Pele, Platini and Maradona, and said he could become "legendary".

Great game, last time I was on the edge of my seat as much was the Portugal game.
Sad to hear the Argentinians were calling the English team fags but I had to laugh when I heard the English fans chant "What's it like to lose a war?"
The two players that were exceptional were Riquelme and Rooney. Rooney's play 4 minutes from the end to almost score with a lob shot was superb.
As for Argentina being the better team, I don't know. I honestly didn't think there was much between the two teams, although they were missing Hienze and we were missing Neville and Cole.

Why not? In reality only Brazil stand in our way, and we will beat them eventually.

We can win the world cup and I really hope it's in 2006. The England squad is the best we've had in years, and on paper in my opinion only Brazil can rival us.

C Ronaldo is better than Rooney

Now you are being silly C Ronaldo plays better than the whole team in most games for Man UTD

No because he isn't that good.

That's just a pile of shit comparing him to any of those players, he's not even on that level.

They say that every tournament, Please... Only Brazil can rival us.. You must be choking, there are many teams that are better than England going into this WC.

ok, now from a neutral point of view (well being german is not really neutral, but whatever ;) ) :

england has definitely a good squad, no doubt, with gerrard and lampard they have a great defensive-midfield, probably the best in the whole world, two good defenders and they have good strikers. on the other hand their weakness could be the goalkeeper.

so, they have a chance of winning the WC, a chance. but i believe they wont make it, simply because they never achieved anything in the last decades. this reason might sound a bit dumb but maybe because of the lack of team spirit they will lose when it comes to the crunch.

i think he didnt say Rooney is now as good as Platini and Co. were at their prime, rather then he thinks hes got the potential to become as good as they were, one day.

i cant really talk on that matter, because i dont see Rooney play every weekend, but i dont think any of you saw Maradona, or Platini playing when they were still active, or even from the very beginning of their career. retrospective, one has a disposition to exaggerate a bit when it comes to judging a players skill and how good they were. not saying Platini, Maradona, Beckenbauer or whoever werent the best player of all time, but maybe you tend to forget that even these players had their lows and didnt play their best football at the age of 20, constantly.

I'm a United fan, and the guy CAN be a match winner, but too often he loses the ball, goes to ground too easily, puts in bad crosses or blazes the ball over the bar. Rooney is the type of player to lift an entire team. Other than his temper, he doesn't have a downside.

england has definitely a good squad, no doubt, with gerrard and lampard they have a great defensive-midfield, probably the best in the whole world, two good defenders and they have good strikers. on the other hand their weakness could be the goalkeeper.
Maybe. Robinson is a top notch keeper, though. He plays in (arguably) the best league in the world with a big club and puts in great performances. I think he's good enough.

Terry and Rio are two of the best centre backs in the World.
Lampard, Gerrard and Beckham (regardless of how popular it is to berate him) are three of the best midfielders in the World on their day. Owen is a World Class striker and Wayne Rooney is phenomenal. With the right attitude (and manager), England can match any other country's starting 11.

Yeah I know that, but I just don't see it.

We will see..

Rio has lost it, he was good a few years ago... now he's started to make stupid mistakes.

He's always been a bit too laid back, but his performances against Chelsea and Argentina were better.

We've always got Campbell and King as back up, anyway. Not to mention Jamie Carragher and Wesley Brown.
